I could well imagine how, seen at a distance, tossing and heaving on the summit of the billows, the long lines of algae have been taken for living things, and thus have been fertile sources of the belief in sea serpents.
It is by lifting up the overhanging masses of slimy fuel, tangles, and sea-grass, that we find the delicate varieties, as the Chondrus with its metallic lustre, and the red Algae, or the stony Corallina, which delights in the obscurity of shaded pools. The sea-weeds will be found studded with mollusks, as Snails and Periwinkles of many queer varieties.
Some attempt has been made to reproduce under an artistic form the aspect of the world in the different geological ages, and to present in single connected pictures the animal and vegetable world of each period. First, we have the Devonian shores, with spreading fields of sea-weed and numbers of the club-shaped Algae of gigantic size.
Thundering waves sweep over and bear away the frail palaces that decked the strand, and even while the shell symphony still charms the ear, the child's rosy feet are washed from their sandy resting-place; she is borne on howling billows far out to a lashed and maddened main, strewn with human drift; and numb with horror she sinks swiftly to a long and final rest among purple algae!

Not until the warty ghoul acquires the sagacity which accompanies ripe age and experience, does it encourage deceptive plumes of innocent algae to anchor themselves to its back. Then it is that detection is beyond ordinary skill, and its presence fraught with danger.
On Plates VII and VIII two kinds of unicellular organisms are shown, of one which the green algae is accustomed to live in light, the other the bacilli in darkness. These things are, of course, well-known facts. Our purpose here, however, is not merely to record them as 'fact', but, by re-creating them within ourselves, to use them to gain an experience of the function of the light-ether.
Inspection, however critical, makes no satisfactory definition between the real and the artificial algae, so perfectly do the details of the moving marine garden blend with the fringes and fur of the animal's rugged and misshapen figure and deformed limbs.
Bacteria, then, can only live in organic matters, now in the presence and now in the absence of air. What we have just said allows us to understand the process of cultivating these organisms. When it is desired to obtain these algae, we must take organic matters or infusions of such.
The structure and coloration of cell contents exhibit the closest alliance to the characteristics of the division of Chroolepideae and of this small division of Chlorophyllaceous Algae, nearest to Gongrosira a genus whose five to six species are inhabitants of fresh water, mostly attached to various minute aquatic Algae and mosses.
