Prose The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede's Ecclesiastical History are both translated in one volume of Bohn's Antiquarian Library. In the Chronicle, read the entries for the years 871, 878, 897, 975, 1087, and 1137. Alfred's Orosius is translated into modern English in the volume of Bohn's Antiquarian Library entitled, Alfred the Great, his Life and Anglo-Saxon Works, by Pauli.

But no sooner had he become King of Wessex, in 871, than he began to prepare for the work of re-introducing learning into his country. Gathering round him the few scholars whom the Danes had left, and sending for others from abroad, he endeavoured to form a literary class. His chief helper in his great enterprise was Asser of St.

He is too experienced a soldier now to risk at the outset of a campaign such a disaster as that which he and Ethelred had sustained in their attempt to assault the camp at Reading in 871. He is just strong enough to keep the pagans within their lines, but has no margin to spare. So he sits down before the camp, but no battle is fought, neither he nor Guthrum caring to bring matters to that issue.

Afterwards he spent a year in Rome receiving religious instruction. In the year 871, when Alfred was twenty-two years old, the Danes invaded various parts of England. Some great battles were fought, and Alfred's elder brother Ethelred, king of the West Saxons, was killed. Thus Alfred became king. The Danes still continued to fight the Saxons, and defeated Alfred in a long and severe struggle.

It was his claim that the rail was rolled direct from the ingot, something Bessemer himself could not do at that time. Mining Journal, 1857, vol. 27, p. 871, and 1858, vol. 28, p. 12. Ibid. , p. 34. Mushet, op. cit. The phrase quoted is typical of Mushet's style. This was the beginning of a series of claims by Mushet as to his essential contributions to Bessemer's invention.

Ethelwolf visited Charles the Bald of France at this time, and married his daughter Judith incidentally. But Baldy died, and was succeeded by Ethelbert, who died six years later, and Ethelred, in 866, took charge till 871, when he died of a wound received in battle and closed out the Ethel business to Alfred.

Taking into account the country north of lat. 24 degrees 45 minutes only for though we had a long spell of sand-ridges between the edge of the desert and Woodhouse Lagoon, and again between that point and Lake Wells, yet these were comparatively low and less steep than those further north, and therefore their extent is not included in this reckoning we traversed 420 miles on the upgoing journey, and 451 miles on the return journey that is, 871 miles of actual travelling over a desert of sand blown by the wind into parallel ridges of the height and frequency already described.

When he became king, in 871, the Danish invaders were so completely triumphant as to force him to flee with a few followers to the forest as a temporary refuge.
