See Guide to the Italian Pictures at Hampton Court, by Mary Logan, 1894. Official Catalogue, and Crowe and Cavalcaselle, ii. 502. Pater: The Renaissance, p. 158. ii. 219. The execution of this grotesque picture is probably due to Girolamo da Carpi, or some other assistant of Dosso. The subject is derived from a passage in the De Divinitate of Cicero, as Herr Wickhoff has pointed out.

In 502, shortly after the expedition of Regulus to Africa, they amounted to 298,000 men capable of bearing arms; thirty years later, shortly before the commencement of the Hannibalic war , they had fallen off to 270,000, or about a tenth, and again twenty years after that, shortly before the end of the same war , to 214,000, or about a fourth; and a generation afterwards during which no extraordinary losses occurred, but the institution of the great burgess-colonies in the plain of northern Italy in particular occasioned a perceptible and exceptional increase the numbers of the burgesses had hardly again reached the point at which they stood at the commencement of this period.

The business of the East naturally tended to the concentration of the financial resources of the country within her towns, but the location of 414 of the 502 banks of the country in the narrow section under consideration would seem to indicate something more than a natural tendency.

Clergy and senators sent in a new memorial to the king Theodorick, in favour of the anti-pope Laurentius, who returned to Rome in 502; and it was four years, during which several councils were held, before the schism was finally composed. He decided to apply to Artaphernes for Persian help; this the viceroy willingly gave as it would further the Persian progress to the objective, the Greek mainland, across the Aegean in a direct line.

The amount drawn from the Treasury from July 1 to November 1, 1879 was $5,770,404.12, of which $1,095,440.33 has been refunded, leaving as the expenditure for that period $4,674,963.79.
