Boring has been carried to a great depth at Sperenberg near Berlin, where, in 1871, the drill had descended 5,500 feet below the surface, passing through a stratum of salt for the last 3,200 feet; but the drilling was still in progress, the whole thickness of the salt-bed not having been penetrated. Aus der Natur, vol. 55, p. 208.

But the work at Norwich was earlier, perhaps by thirty years, than either of the others. It is very difficult to obtain exact and authoritative measurements; but those usually given supply the following comparison: Norwich, 14 bays; length of nave, 250 feet: Peterborough, 11 bays; length of nave, 228 feet: Ely, 12 bays; length of nave, 208 feet.

Lucien tendered his resignation, which was accepted, and he departed for Spain. This diplomatic mission turned to his advantage. It was necessary that one should veil the Machiavellian invention of the 'Parallel. See Meneval, tome iii. p. 105. Whoever wrote it Napoleon certainly planned its issue. See also Lanfrey, tome ii. p. 208; and compare the story in Iung's Lucien, tome ii. p. 490.

Rough low granite hills all along our route, but very little feed. Passed many clay-pans with water in them. The country was sandy and stony, and is thickly wooded. Mount Woodroffe bears north 208 degrees east magnetic from our camp, and a remarkable granite hill bore north, which I named Mount Elizabeth. Latitude 26 degrees 13 minutes south. Marked a tree F 89, being 89th camp from Geraldton.

208 Let my doing nothing when I have nothing to do become untroubled in its depth of peace like the evening in the seashore when the water is silent. 209 Maiden, your simplicity, like the blueness of the lake, reveals your depth of truth. 210 The best does not come alone. It comes with the company of the all. 211 God's right hand is gentle, but terrible is his left hand.

Thus briefly New York averaged 208 persons per acre, and 16.37 per dwelling; London, for the same area, 191.5 persons per acre, and 7.21 per house.

She was standing at one of the schoolroom windows that overlooked the yard; she spoke as if thoroughly vexed. "What is it now 208 again?" Sister Angelica looked up from the copybook she was correcting. "Oh, yes, of course; it's always 208." "Oh, she doesn't mean anything; it's only her high spirits; they must have some vent."

She only sent Lord Delawar, Sir Ralph Sadler, Sir Thomas Bromley, and Dr. * Camden, p. 440. Strype, vol. ii. App. p. 23. Digges, p. 16, 107. Strype, vol. ii. p. 51, 52. * Digges, p. 194, 208, 209. Strype, vol. ii. p. 40, 51. Camden, p. 442. v D'Ewes, p. 207, 208, etc. v* D'Ewes, p. 219, 241.

It seemed proper for him thus to exhibit a specimen of the skill for which he was justly famed. The Elector before his life closed, so says the chronicle, had killed 28,000 wild boars, 208 bears, 3543 wolves, 200 badgers, 18,967 foxes, besides stags and roedeer in still greater number, making a grand total of 113,629 beasts. The leader of the Lutheran party of Germany had not lived in vain.

Yet the Thomas car that did it was restored to its original condition at a cost of only $90 after the trip was ended. Another remarkable demonstration of endurance was that given by a Chalmers-Detroit touring car, which was driven 208 miles every day for a hundred consecutive days over average roads.
