He was fairly well to do, and after considering the situation he determined to seek a home in a Free State and live there to the end of his days. A treaty with the Indians in 1784, at Fort Stanwix, had secured from the Iroquois all claims to the lands which now make up the States of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
Leger, destitute of his camp baggage, caught in his own wolf-pit, flinging a dozen harmless bombs at Stanwix, and frightened half to death at every rumor from Albany; McDonald chased out of the county; Mann captured, and Sir Henry Clinton dawdling in New York and bothering his head over Washington while Burgoyne, in a devil of a plight, sits yonder yelling for help!
FORT STANWIX, also called Schuyler, built by General Stanwix of Abercromby's army in 1758. GENERAL NICHOLAS HERKIMER, a leading settler of the Mohawk Valley. JOSEPH BRANT, or Thayandanega, sometime pupil of Dr. With Johnson, he held most of the Six Nations at enmity with us during the Revolution.
Convinced that the enemy would shortly invade the Mohawk Valley, Schuyler had sent Colonel Gansevoort to put Fort Stanwix, the key to this valley, in a state of defence, before it should be attacked. St. Leger's force was the counterpart of Burgoyne's, in that it consisted of regular troops, loyalists, and Indians.
In 1768, the Iroquois had ceded Kentucky to the British Crown by the treaty of Fort Stanwix; whereupon the Cherokees had protested so vociferously that the Crown's Indian agent, to quiet them, had signed a collateral agreement with them. Though claimed by many, Kentucky was by common consent not inhabited by any of the tribes. It was the great Middle Ground where the Indians hunted.
This was evident in his interview with General Lafayette, in 1825. On being presented to the general, the orator inquired if he recollected being present, at the treaty of peace with the Six Nations at Fort Stanwix, in 1784. Lafayette replied that he remembered that great council very well.
He married Maria Gansevoort, daughter of General Peter Gansevoort, best known as 'the hero of Fort Stanwix. This fort was situated on the present site of Rome, N.Y.; and there Gansevoort, with a small body of men, held in check reinforcements on their way to join Burgoyne, until the disastrous ending of the latter's campaign of 1777 was insured.
"It was bad, very bad in me against such a creature; but I did not know her then; and she shall have no reason to lament the hour that first put it into my head. I will make her very happy, Mary; happier than she has ever yet been herself, or ever seen anybody else. I will not take her from Northamptonshire. I shall let Everingham, and rent a place in this neighbourhood; perhaps Stanwix Lodge.
'Who'll follow me to Stanwix? he bawls; and, by gad, sir, the Massachusetts men fell over each other trying to sign the rolls." He laughed again, waving my papers in the air and slapping them down on a knapsack. "You will doubtless wish to hand these to the General yourself," he said, pleasantly. "Pray, sir, do not think of standing on ceremony; I have dined, Captain."
"Nothing yet to inconvenience you, but our Governor Clinton may send you a billet doux from Albany before May ends and June begins if this periwigged beau, St. Leger, strolls out to ogle Stanwix " Dorothy turned her horse sharply, saluted Sir George, and galloped away towards her father, who had halted at the cross-roads to wait for us. "Good-bye, Sir George," I said, offering my hand.
