Whether Newfoundland, mastiff, bloodhound, or what not, it was impossible to say. He seemed to be of too strange and mysterious a nature to belong to any variety among those of popular nomenclature. Being thus assignable to no breed, he was the ideal embodiment of canine greatness a generalization from what was common to all.
This mode of reasoning, by which a bad generalization is made to overrule all facts which contradict it, is Petitio Principii in one of its most palpable forms. None of the modes of assuming what should be proved are in more frequent use than what are termed by Bentham “question-begging appellatives;” names which beg the question under the disguise of stating it.
Spencer has shown, by a vast generalization of facts, the working throughout all realms of existence known to man of certain common tendencies of variation and new and specialized formation.
From a broad psychological standpoint, this is undoubtedly true but the generalization is too wide to be of any practical psychiatric value.

The form of Partial Skepticism to which these remarks apply is perhaps more common than it is generally supposed to be.
