The relation of CUT-WORK to inlay is clear in fact, the one is the first step towards the other. You have only to stop short of the actual inlaying, and you have cut-work.
In the fitting of this inlay work the stones some of them almost as hard as diamonds are cut and polished to nearly mathematical accuracy of size and shape. But the more carefully and exactly these are made, the more badly they fit and the worse failure is the whole design, unless the spaces intended for them in the marble are likewise cut and prepared with nicety and accuracy.

One of the peculiar charms of such hedges is that where yew of a different kind or age, or a bush of box, forms part of the mass, it shows like an inlay of a different material, and the same effect is given merely by the trick that some yews have of growing their leaves or shoots at a different angle from that favoured by others.
