To know from this the form of this spheroid, that is to say the proportion of the semi-diameters CS, CP, of its elliptical section, which are perpendicular to one another, I considered that the point M where the ellipse is touched by the straight line FH, parallel to CG, ought to be so situated that CM makes with the perpendicular CL an angle of 6 degrees 40 minutes; since, this being so, this ellipse satisfies what has been said about the refraction of the ray perpendicular to the surface CG, which is inclined to the perpendicular CL by the same angle.

The connexion with a reward also does not differ, for it consists in both cases in attaining to Brahman; cp. Ch. Up. VIII, 12, 3 'Having approached the highest light he is manifested in his own form, and Bri. Up. V, 4, 24 'He becomes indeed the fearless Brahman. That, in the Chandogya-text, the term ether denotes the highest Brahman, has already been determined under I, 3, 14. Up.

There it was, immovable through any storm or stress or injudicious investment by Albert Weener, "CP&AC ... 1/16." I must have raised my eyes from the newspaper just about the time the fog lifted. Before us, like the smokewreath accompanying the discharge of some giant cannon, the green mass volleyed into the sea.

The phrase "He made a world and bore it into the Temple" seems to mean that He assumed a body of manifestation. Cp. It is called Partaker because it partakes of the Deficiency as well; and it is called 'Cross' because it hath been fixed immovably and unchangeably, so that nothing of the Deficiency should be able to approach the æons within the Fullness."

Those also, we reply, who do not study Veda and Vedanta may acquire the requisite knowledge by hearing Itihasas and Puranas; and there are texts which allow Sudras to become acquainted with texts of that kind; cp. e.g.

Having made a specialty of warfare he did not understand how to remain at peace; the Capitol he had once saved he occupied for the purpose of establishing a tyranny; although a patrician he became the prey of a house-servant; and whereas he was deemed a warrior, he was arrested after the manner of a slave and hurled down the very rock from which he had repulsed the Gauls. Cp.

This fact is important for the history of Christian mysticism. This seems to imply a doctrine of pre-existence. Perhaps the passage is related to John 17:16: "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.... As Thou didst send Me into the world, even so sent I them into the world." Cp. The Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the sanctuary."

Possibly "Propatôr," "Autopatôr" and "Prôtogennêtôr" may also have been the official designations of hierophants in the sacramental side of some "Mystery" consummated in solitude, from which the candidate returned an "Epopt." Cp. Ps. 104:1, 2: "Thou art clothed with honour and majesty: who coverest thyself with light as with a garment."

To this the Sutra replies, 'Not the Self, on account of scriptural statement. The Self is not produced, since certain texts directly deny its origination; cp. Up. Up. And the eternity of the soul is learned from the same texts, cp. 'There is one eternal thinker, &c. Up. Up. For these reasons the soul is not produced.

So real was the belief in these curses that the elder Pliny says that everyone is afraid of being placed under evil spells; and they are frequently referred to in antiquity. Fowler, Rom. Cp. At the risk of irrelevance, I cannot refrain from pointing out the enduring nature of proverbs as exemplified in this section.
