We passed through a large swamp covered with mangroves then into a dense tropical bush, passing through an extensive grove of sago palms and good-sized mango trees. The mangoes were small about the size of a plum and very sweet.

They are black and, like the African negroes, have black, kinky hair. They are far superior to the native Australians. Many of the tribes are good farmers, and cultivate crops of sago, maize, and tobacco. On the coasts there are good boat-builders and sailors. The greater part of the Melanesian tribes is hostile and blood-thirsty; head-hunting is a common practice.

Now, in milk, the proper food of infants, the elements of the former are to those of the latter about in the proportion of 1 to 2, while in arrowroot, sago, and tapioca they are only as 1 to 26, and in wheaten flour only as 1 to 7.

"I've only been doing my duty, sir," inserted Sago, drawing the salad spoon through his hand very much as a Samurai would have drawn a sword. "Ellen she I mean her didn't " "Never mind, never mind," groaned Mr. Hamshaw, at bay. "You may both go. I fire I discharge both of you! I'm sure, Mr. Goodrich, you will overlook this unfortunate " "Discharge me, sor?" half shrieked Ellen.

If seasoning is not advisable, the sago may be boiled in milk instead of water, and eaten plain. Wash the tapioca well, and let it steep for five or six hours, changing the water three times. Simmer it in the last water till quite clear, then season it with sugar and wine, or lemon juice. Allow three large table-spoonfuls of oatmeal or Indian meal to a quart of water.

"What is imported is so in appearance," answered the doctor. "In order that it may keep, it is prepared by being first moistened, and then passed through a sieve into a shallow dish, and placed over a fire, which causes it to assume a globular form. The sago, when properly packed, will keep a long time; but the flour we have here would quickly turn sour, if exposed to the air.

He was a man who relieved his surcharged feelings with strong language a habit of recent acquisition. He indulged in it now and felt better. He rushed back through the trees until he caught sight of Iris industriously kneading the sago pith in one of those most useful dish-covers.

He did not even pant but appeared as composed and unmoved, as if he had walked the half-mile he had been seen to pass over on a trot. "Sago Sago," cried the captain, heartily "you are welcome back, Nick; I am glad to see you still so active." "Sago" answered the guttural voice of the Indian, who quietly nodded his head.

The trade is chiefly carried on by Kling vessels, as they are called, from the coast of Coromandel, which supply cargoes of piece-goods, and also raw silk, opium, and other articles, which they provide at Pinang or Malacca; in return for which they receive gold, wax, sago, salted fish, and fish-roes, elephants' teeth, gambir, camphor, rattans, and other canes.

It is also used to make marine soap, which will lather in salt water. The wood of the palm is used for ornamental joinery, the leaves for thatch and basket-work, the fibre for cordage and cocoa-nut matting, and the husk for fuel and brushes. Sago and tapioca are made from the starch yielded by several species of palm.
