The beauty of the verse, the charm of the music, and the decorations which accompanied its recital, produced an excitement of feeling and intellect that combined to open the way for the true dramatic art. At the same time, several eminent poets devoted their attention to that style of composition which was destined to form the glory of Ariosto.

=The Second Stage.= Somewhat later in the history of fiction, as in the history of figure painting, we find instances in which the element of setting is used for a decorative purpose, and is brought into an artistic relation with the elements of action and character. Such a use is made of landscape, for example, in the "Orlando Furioso" of Ariosto and the "Faerie Queene" of Spenser.

Dante we read, and Petrarca, and both we loved, though better than the works of either and this for the sake of the swift movement and action that is in his narrative, though his melodies, I realized, were not so pure the Orlando of Ariosto. Sometimes we would be joined by Fifanti himself; but he never stayed very long.

Comparing together Boiardo and Ariosto, I am, of course, aware of the infinite advantages of the latter. Ariosto is a man of far more varied genius; he is an artist, while Boiardo is an amateur; he is learned in arranging and ornamenting; he knows how to alternate various styles, how to begin and how to end.

The whole future of Italian poetry hung on his not continuing in the same style, but even Petrarch relied more on his Latin poetry than on the Sonnets and 'Canzoni, and Ariosto himself was desired by some to write his poem in Latin.

LOPE DE VEGA, VELASQUEZ, ARIOSTO, and TASSO, are all said to have betrayed at their school-tasks the most marked indications of their subsequent characteristics. This decision of the impulse of genius is apparent in MURILLO. This young artist was undistinguished at the place of his birth.

Gervais, Athos, and the napkin which was converted into a banner?" and he then related to Raoul the story of the bastion, and Raoul fancied he was listening to one of those deeds of arms belonging to days of chivalry, so gloriously recounted by Tasso and Ariosto.

M. de Voltaire; My Discussions with That Great Man Ariosto- -The Duc de Villars The Syndic and the Three Girls Dispute with Voltaire Aix-en-Savoie The Marquis Desarmoises "M. de Voltaire," said I, "this is the happiest moment of my life. I have been your pupil for twenty years, and my heart is full of joy to see my master."

And because poetry, unlike philosophy, cannot deal with abstractions but must be vivid and concrete, he was forced to embody his virtues and foes to virtue and to use the way of allegory. His outward plan, with its knights and dragons and desperate adventures, he procured from Ariosto.

Grey, glancing around the library, where the governess sat sewing, while Salome read aloud a passage in Ariosto. "She is not very well, and went up stairs, two hours ago, to rest. Do you wish to see her immediately?" "Yes. Call her down." When the teacher left the room, Dr. Grey approached the table where Salome sat, and looked over her shoulder.
