Loki reached down and took the magic wishing-cap. As soon as the cap was off, the toad disappeared, and there lay Alberich, held fast by Wotan's giant foot. "Let me go!" shrieked the dwarf. "Take your foot off of me, this minute!" Wotan calmly answered: "You may go when you have promised all I ask." "Then what do you want?" groaned Alberich. "I want all your glittering gold," said Wotan.
Brünnhilda orders the funeral fire to be built; the body is put on it and consumed: Brünnhilda mounts Grani and scatters the ashes, and with them the Ring, into the river; the waters rise, and Hagen rushes after the Ring, to be drawn down; Wotan's power went when the spear was shattered, and now that the Ring is returned to the Rhine no other power controls Loge.
While I was singing 'Wotan's Abschied' to my friends I noticed the same expression on Cosima's face as I had seen on it, to my astonishment, in Zurich on a similar occasion, only the ecstasy of it was transfigured into something higher.
The Ring is, from beginning to end, a gorgeous spectacle, a glorification of the grandeur and loveliness of the earth, the splendour and beauty and strength of human life. Not even Wotan's renunciation takes away a jot from its note of praise of humanity one might even say praise of the joy of living.
Still Brunhilde lay in fear and grief at Wotan's feet. At length she lifted her sad eyes to Wotan and cried: "Was it so wrong, this thing that I have done? 'T is you who taught me to shield the brave and the true. I only sought to care for one you loved." "Brunhilde, you disobeyed me. I have told you what your punishment shall be. I cannot change it."
But there is hallucination in these etchings, beginning with Le Stryge, and its demoniac leer, "insatiable vampire, l'eternelle luxure." That gallery of Notre Dame, with Wotan's ravens flying through the slim pillars from a dream city bathed in sinister light, is not the only striking conception of the poet-etcher.
"Wotan," she cried, "Siegmund must not be brought to Valhalla. I ask that my friend, the forest chief, shall be given aid. Send Brunhilde to bear Hunding to our castle." "No," replied Wotan, "I must protect Siegmund. He it is who won my sword." "Take the sword from him," replied Wotan's wife in rage. "I plead for Hunding's rights.
"To Wotan's will you speak in speaking to me. Who am I, if not your will?"
His work seems forever seeking to form images of grandeur and empire, flashing with Siegfried's sword, commanding the planet with Wotan's spear, upbuilding above the heads of men the castle of the gods.
This calm frankness in the god, with its effect of personal clearness from all sense of guilt, suggests the measure of Wotan's distinguishing simplicity. Referring later to the dubious act which so effectually laid the foundation of sorrows, he says, "Unknowingly deceitful, I practised untruth. Loge artfully tempted me."
