The vote stood twenty-one to nineteen, the majority of two being in Mr. Willson's favour. The Reformers felt that they had achieved a triumph, and were accordingly jubilant; but they soon found that the mere control of the Assembly signified very little in the absence of Executive responsibility.

The phantom put out his hand to lay hold of a chair-back as some people do in taking a seat, and his shadowy arm passed through the frame-work. "Ah!" he said, "I forgot that I was not substance." I do not know whether "The Old Sergeant" is ever read now; it has probably passed with other great memories of the great war; and I am afraid none of Willson's other verse is remembered.

We see reasons to expect substantial advantages from Mr. Willson's books; and we believe teachers will appreciate and use them.

Transcripts of four of the Radisson Journals copied from the originals in the Bodleian Library, Oxford are possessed by the Prince Society, Boston. Of modern histories dealing with the early era Beckles Willson's The Great Company , George Bryce's Remarkable History of the Hudson's Bay Company , and Laut's Conquest of the Great North-West are the only works to be taken seriously.

Willson's, with whom he always quarreled in church, road, and political matters, was too much. "But, father, you never paid him wages," ventured the mother. "Wages? Wages to one's own son, that one has raised and fed and shod from the cradle? Wages, when he knowed he'd come in fer part of the farm when I'd done with it? Who in consarnation ever gives their son wages?"

Willson's is marred by many errors due to a lack of local knowledge of the West. Bryce's work is free of these errors, but, having been issued before the Archives of Hudson's Bay House were open for more than a few weeks at a time, it lacks first-hand data from headquarters; though to Bryce must be given the honour of unearthing much of the early history of Radisson.

Sam did not go to Willson's to work that day, but stayed home, playing the part of a big, joyful, clumsy nurse, his roughened hands gentle and loving, his big rugged heart bursting with happiness.

Willson's answer to the question, What to teach? is in some good degree embodied in his elaborate series of 'School and Family Readers, of which the first six of the eight contemplated volumes have already appeared.

One class, of twelve pupils, read page 70th in Willson's Reader, on "Going Away." They had not read the passage before, and they went through it with little spelling or hesitation. They had recited the first thirty pages of Towle's Speller, and the multiplication-table as high as fives, and were commencing the sixes.
