In its sublime universality there are no distinctions. Death and the Gospel know no ranks. In both, 'the rich and the poor meet together, the Lord is the Maker of them all. 'In Christ Jesus there is neither circumcision nor uncircumcision. The blue sky which bends above all alike is like that great word. It treats all as utterly helpless. It offers to all Redemption as their most pressing want.

Likewise he that is called, being free, is Christ's slave. The Apostle applies the very same principle, in the adjoining verses, to the distinction between circumcision and uncircumcision.

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will in nowise impute sin ." This blessedness then, is it for the circumcision, or for the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was imputed to Abraham for righteousness. How then was it imputed to him? when circumcised, or while uncircumcised? Not when circumcised, but whilst uncircumcised.

'Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, say two texts. 'Circumcision availeth nothing, and uncircumcision availeth nothing, says the other. It neither is anything nor does anything. Did Paul say that because circumcision was a Jewish rite? No.

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love." Such is every Christian's hope before God. He "counts all things to be loss and dung that he win Christ; but the righteousness which is of God by faith." But while St.

And so we come to the last of these great texts: 'In Christ Jesus, neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love. That is to say, if we are to be made over again, we must have faith in Christ Jesus. We have got to the root now, so far as we are concerned.

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

Not the world, but Christ, is crucified in the monasteries. In this verse Paul expresses his hatred of the world. The hatred was mutual. As Paul, so we are to despise the world and the devil. With Christ on our side we can defy him and say: "Satan, the more you hurt me, the more I oppose you." For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

So he commanded them to be baptised in the name of the Lord. Then they entreated him to tarry there some days. CHAP. XI. NOW the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. And when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they of the circumcision disputed with him, saying, Thou hast gone in to men holding uncircumcision, and hast eaten with them.

Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
