This affection technically known as phthisis pulmonalis is the termination of chronic disease of the lungs. These organs become filled with many little cysts, or sacks, containing a yellowish or yellowish-white fluid, which in time is hardened, producing a condition of the lungs known as tuberculous.

Surgical interference may give relief when important structures are being pressed upon tracheotomy, for example, may be required where life is threatened by asphyxia.
