He had been thinking a great deal of Joan since he had first seen her. The startled, child-like face, the wide frightened eyes, had impressed themselves on his mind the night before. He had lifted her in his arms and carried her outside; the poise of her thrown-back head against his arm stayed in his mind, a very warm memory.
With the firelight playing over his face and touching the thrown-back chestnut locks of his heavy hair with high lights here and there, he looked decidedly boyish. At her suggestion of his probable loneliness he smiled and glanced at Bim.
I heard the latch rattling and the jarring of the thrown-back sash, and I knew that some one I would have given the world to have known who looked out, and saw us as we swept round the corner and away downhill.
"Shall I prepare your bath?" The sleeper showed no signs of awakening. Soames forced himself to touch one of the thrown-back shoulders. He shook it gently. The man on the bed raised his arms and dropped them back again into their original position, without opening his eyes. "They... are hiding," he murmured thickly... "in the... orange grove.... If the felucca sails... closer... they will"...
His naked figure is magnificent, his attitudes splendid, his thrown-back head superb, whether he be slowly and painfully emerging from the earth, staggered and gasping with his newly infused life, or sinking oppressed on the ground, broken and crushed by the sound of the trumpet of judgment; or whether he be moving forward with ineffable longing towards the angel about to award him the crown of the blessed; in all these positions he is heroically beautiful.
He was a man of rotund presence, florid face, thrown-back head, and flowing hair, with all that magisterial condescension which the environment of the Fourth Estate nourishes in its fortunate members; the Roman citizen was "not in it" for birthright. To my bad luck a plan of Trafalgar hung in evidence, as he stalked from room to room.
