We hang our walls with pictures, or cover them with textiles, or with paper which carries design, or even colour them with pigments something anything, which will disguise a restraining bound, or make it masquerade as a luxury. This effort or instinct has set in motion the machinery of the world.

The country has enjoyed a large degree of prosperity and sound progress during the past year with a steady improvement in methods of production and distribution and consequent advancement in standards of living. Progress has, of course, been unequal among industries, and some, such as coal, lumber, leather, and textiles, still lag behind.

This war is raising the devil with the United States textiles. Maybe the Germans won't get a glad hand when they come back. We hear that they're going to flood the market with good, low-priced dyes so as to bust up the new American plants. Haven't you heard them hollerin' for tariff protection? I'm going over to look up a new green dye the French are getting out. We hear it's pretty good stuff.

Two-thirds of the total Austrian exports, the value of which was over L63,000,000 in 1912, come from the Bohemian lands. To England alone Austria exported L9,000,000 worth of Bohemian sugar annually. Bohemian beer, malt and hops were exported especially to France, textiles and machines to Italy.

I must take the liberty of suggesting, however, that upon some antecedent kind of vessel, the eyes of the Amazonian Islanders may have been, to give Professor Hartt's idea, "trained to take physiological and æsthetic delight in regularly recurring lines and dots"; not on the pottery itself, as he seemed to think, for decoration was old in basketry and the textiles when pottery was first made.

Other art textiles showed incidents in the lives of forest people little men and women in striped linen garments, wonderful trees and birds such as no human eye ever beheld but above the hangings a row of coats of arms again appeared, in which the imperial escutcheon alternated with the Saxon.

If you will attend any of the classes, in arithmetic, in textiles, in hygiene, in color and design, in demonstration sales, in business forms, you will get not only a new view of the art of selling goods over the counter but a new vision of a big principle in education. In the class on color, for instance, you will at first be puzzled by the vivid interest taken by the pupils in the theory of it.

A strong tip's out that Textiles are to be rocketed." Ten points up already on the mere rumor! Already ten dollars to pay on every share I was "short" and I short more than two hundred thousand! I felt the claws of the fiend Ruin sink into the flesh of my shoulders. "Ball doesn't know how I'm fixed," I remember I thought, "and he mustn't know."

The German trading post at Venice received metals, furs, leather goods, and woolen cloth from the North, and sent back spices, silks, and other commodities of the East, together with glassware, fine textiles, weapons, and paper of Venetian manufacture.
