The rise and fall of Japan's phenomenal system of feudal etiquette is synchronous with that of her feudal system, to which it is due rather than to the asserted "impersonality" of the race mind. The impersonal theory is amazingly blind to adverse phenomena. Such a one is the marked sensitiveness of the middle and upper classes to the least slight or insult.

All these ideals of freedom, of brotherhood, of power, of justice, of beauty, which have been at one time or another the fundamental idea in civilizations, are heaven-born, and descended from the divine world, incarnating first in the highest minds in each race, perceived by them and transmitted to their fellow-citizens; and it is the emergence or manifestation of one or other of these ideals in a group which is the beginning of a nation; and the more strongly the ideal is held the more powerful becomes the national being, because the synchronous vibration of many minds in harmony brings about almost unconsciously a psychic unity, a coalescing of the subconscious being of many.

Many synchronous and successive motions of our muscular fibres, and of our organs of sense, or ideas, become associated so as to form indissoluble tribes or trains of action, as shewn in Section X. on Associate Motions.

Finally, the strength of the association between the ideas depends upon 'the vividness of the associated feelings, and the frequency of the association. Hume had said that association depended upon three principles, 'contiguity in time and place, 'causation, and 'resemblance. Contiguity in time corresponds to the successive, and contiguity in place to the synchronous, order.

Catenated trains or tribes of action are easier dissevered than catenated circles of action. Hence in epileptic fits the synchronous connected tribes of action, which keep the body erect, are dissevered, but the circle of vital motions continues undisturbed.

The forces were too great; they were scattered too widely over the field of operations; the conditions of the roads, the width of the streams and the broken and wooded features of the battle fields were too various, and the means of transport and supply were too inadequate to permit of simultaneous and synchronous movements, even if they had been intelligently provided for, and the generals had uniformly done their best to carry them out.

"I was dying for want of air. I was suffocating." Her intensity caught him. He lumbered to his feet. "What are you talking about?" She rose, too, almost with a synchronous movement. An interested spectator, I continued sitting, my hands clasped round my knees. "The little prison you put me into. I felt this in my throat" and forgetful of the admirable Mrs.

Of these we have many kinds, but only five are in operation at present, namely: The electro-magnetic timing instrument of Professor Morse; the electro-magnetic step-by-step printing of Mr. House; the electro-magnetic synchronous printing of Mr. Hughes; the electro-chemical rhythmic of Mr.

Every phenomenon is related, in an uniform manner, to some phenomena that coexist with it, and to some that have preceded or will follow it. Of the uniformities which exist among synchronous phenomena, the most important, on every account, are the laws of number; and next to them those of space, or in other words, of extension and figure.

Just as electrical disturbances are said to be in some way connected with sun spots, so Honora learned that a certain glumness and tendency to discuss expenses on the part of her husband were synchronous with a depression in the market. "I wish you'd learn to go a little slow, Honora," he said one evening. "The bills are pretty stiff this month.
