I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied. In a controversy with an Oxford scholar, conducted in the open air, under the Martyrs' Memorial in that centre of careless professors, Gowles had spoken of "Nicodemus," "Eubulus," and "Stephanas." His unmannerly antagonist jeering at these slips of pronunciation, Gowles uttered his celebrated and crushing retort, "Did Paul know Greek?"

Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Afterwards he says 'I baptized also the house of Stephanas: and he finishes by saying, 'I know not whether I baptized any other. Will you say, 'If Paul could be ignorant or mistaken about the high-priest, or the number of persons he had baptized; he might be ignorant or mistaken on every subject? The truth is, a man who was so much taken up with great things, would be sure to think but little of small things.

"I thank God, says he, that I baptized none of you but Crispus and Gaius; lest any should say that I baptized in my own name. And I baptized also the house of Stephanas. Besides I know not whether I baptized any other, for Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel."

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, be manful, be strong. Let all your concerns be transacted in love. I rejoice in the arrival of Stephanas, and Fortunatus, and Achaicus; because what was lacking from you, they have supplied. For they have refreshed my spirit and yours; respect therefore such men.
