Now the Spirit of Christ commends many examples to us: as, Enoch's walking with God, Gen. v. 24; Noah's uprightness, Gen. vi.; Abraham's faith, Rom. iv., and obedience, Gen. xxii.; Lot's zeal against Sodom's sins, 2 Pet. ii. 9; Job's patience, James v. 10, 11.

The promise of deliverance, which comes side by side with the stern sentence, illustrates the blessed truth that God's darkest threatenings are accompanied with a revelation of the way of escape. The ark is always shown along with the flood. Zoar is pointed out when God foretells Sodom's ruin. We are no sooner warned of the penalties of sin, than we are bid to hear the message of mercy in Christ.

They might have elected him He was getting on amazingly well; wonderfully prosperous. But by and by there comes a war. If you go into Sodom, you must take Sodom's judgment when it comes, for it is bound to come.

'The sins of our day are conspicuous and open as Sodom's were; pride and covetousness, loathing of the gospel, and contemning holiness, have covered the face of the nation. p. 534. And yet, lo! here they were in a twinkling, shunted and shot into his own house and his own stackyard.

His honour is involved in protecting us if we enter into the strong city of which the builder and maker is God. And 'for David's sake, too, He defends Zion, because He had sworn to David to dwell there. But Zion's security becomes an illusion if Zion breaks away from God. If it becomes as Sodom, it shares Sodom's fate.

The strongly figurative representation in verses 20, 21, according to which Jehovah goes down to ascertain whether the facts of Sodom's sin correspond to the report of it, belongs to the early stage of revelation, and need not surprise us, but should impress on us the gradual character of the divine Revelation, which would have been useless unless it had been accommodated to the mental and spiritual stature of its recipients.

If any should ask me what are the sins of our day, I would say they are conspicuous, they are open, they are declared as Sodom's were. All tables are full of vomit and filthiness. And for pride and covetousness, for loathing of the gospel, and contemning holiness, as these have covered the face of the nation, as they have infected most of them that now name the name of Christ.
