Conjecture of my state, after hovering timidly in dread of relapses, settled and assured me I was lying baked, half-buried in an old river-bed; moss at my cheek, my body inextricable; water now and then feebly striving to float me out, with horrid pain, with infinite refreshingness. A shady light, like the light through leafage, I could see; the water I felt. Why did it keep trying to move me?

When he had assured them of his undying friendship, one of the prospectors asked: "What's a smart man like you muling rocks around in a river-bed for, anyway? Can't you strike nothing better down to the cities?" "No," declared Black, thickly. "Couldn't strike a job nohow when I left them. British Columbia played out and I had no money to take me to California."

For a moment I half regretted that I had not accepted the invitation to the river-bed; but, the next moment, a breeze swept up the long, dark canyon, and the waiting files of the pines beyond bent toward me in salutation.

"It's a pitiful stake against such odds!" she scorned. "And all the old settlers say there's gold in there rich pockets of it, washed out of the ledges in the sides of the walls and held by the rocks in the river-bed and along the margins.

Maitland turned noiselessly, rested elbows on the rail, and, staring, framed a theory to account for her position, if not for her patience. On either hand the road, dividing, struck off at a tangent, down the banks and into the river-bed.

After placing a white stone by the footprints to indicate their whereabouts, I searched along the river-bed for signs that would show a track towards the bank; but not a single mark could be found pointing in that direction. It was obvious that the hare had not left the island till, at any rate, some hours after the rain.

A score more savages had emerged from the woods and were eagerly searching, from the limbs of trees above, where I might be perched, to the black river-bed below.

30 "Moon, for what do you wait?" "To salute the sun for whom I must make way." 31 The trees come up to my window like the yearning voice of the dumb earth. 32 His own mornings are new surprises to God. 33 Life finds its wealth by the claims of the world, and its worth by the claims of love. 34 The dry river-bed finds no thanks for its past. 35 The bird wishes it were a cloud.

The overland telegraph pointed absolutely straight to the border city of Kot Ghazi and, better still, to a river-bed which would contain pools of water, thirty miles this side of it, at a spot a few miles from which stood a lost lone dak-bungalow on Indian soil a dak-bungalow whereat would be waiting a shikarri retainer, and such things as tea, fuel, potted foods, possibly fresh meat, and luxury of luxuries, a hot bath....

Our little trip to Huilotepec was for the purpose of photographing the curious and interesting mapa belonging to the village. We rode out over the hot and dusty river-bed road, arriving at noon. Sending for the agente and secretario, we ordered breakfast and made known our errand. Though it plainly was not to their taste, the mapa was brought out for our inspection.
