There may be cases of oppression, of violence, and of punishments, though they are rare, the aim of which is not to secure the privileges of the propertied classes.
However bitterly some of these propertied interests might war upon one another for supremacy, there was never a time when the majority of the men who sat in Congress, the legislatures or the judges did not represent, or respond to, either the interests or the ideals of one or more of these divisions of the propertied classes.
We may discern in it the expression of a feeling prevalent throughout the cottages an unreasoned but convinced distrust of propertied folk, and a sense of being unprotected and helpless against their privileges and power.
