Praed are far from flattering to her countrywomen, and might be somewhat misleading if we permitted ourselves to forget that in every case it is only one phase of a colonial girl's life that is being given.

Amongst the last of the departing guests the fourth and fifth brothers, Nicholas and Roger, walked away together, directing their steps alongside Hyde Park towards the Praed Street Station of the Underground. Like all other Forsytes of a certain age they kept carriages of their own, and never took cabs if by any means they could avoid it.

I'm an outlaw, you see, through no fault of mine.... I couldn't give you as a reference, and I don't know any man who would be generous enough to take the risk of participating in the fraud.... unless it were Praed good old Praddy. I'm sure it's been done now and again. They call Judge FitzSimmons 'an old woman. Well, d'you know, I believe he is ... a wise old woman."

So the firmament was occupied by rather wandering stars: some of them elders already noticed, others born in the ten or twelve years between Keats and the eldest of the Tennysons . The chief of these were the pair of half-serious, half-humorous singers, Hood and Praed.

It was some comfort to him in this extremity to recognise on the box the well-known broad back of Clegg, a cabman who stabled his two horses in some mews near Praed Street, and whom he had been accustomed to patronise in bad weather for several years. Clegg would know him, in spite of his ridiculous transformation.

"If this man's been here ever since the 17th," he said, "he can't have had anything to do with the affairs in Praed Street and Maida Vale! Supposing, now I'm only supposing that young Jap's been lying all the time?" He turned again this time on the two chess-players, who had now interrupted their game and were leaning back in their chairs, evidently amused at the baffled faces of the searchers.

One detachment hastened to Queen's Road, by way of Praed Street, Craven Road, Craven Hill, Leinster Terrace and the Bayswater Road, with the purpose of approaching Whiteley's from the South; the other half marched direct to Westbourne Grove, along Paddington Green Road to Bishop's Road.

Praed says: "At first the natives retreated before the whites; and, except that they every now and then speared a beast in one of the herds, gave little cause for uneasiness.

In short, I shall be from this day forth Vavasour Williams, law-student! Would it be safe, d'you think, in that capacity to go down and see his old father?" Praed: "Vivie! I did think you were a sober-minded young woman who would steer clear of of crime: for this impersonation would be a punishable offence..." Vivie: "Crime? What nonsense!

That date, then, becomes of special importance what happened at Multenius's shop in Praed Street on the afternoon of November 18th, between half-past four and half-past five is, of course, the thing that really is of importance. Now, what did happen? I can tell you save as regards one detail which is, perhaps, of more importance than the other details.
