She felt that an inverted tub that was likely to see-saw during class hours would tend rather to develop a sense of humor in her pupils than to contribute to her pedagogical dignity. The camp, as may already have been inferred, enjoyed a matriarchal form of government.

But the final real judge of the merits of a schoolbook is the boy or girl who uses it. If the book is truly pedagogical, adjusted in every part to the average mental development of the child, it becomes a valuable tool in the school room.

In this school the point of view, however, should be broadly pedagogical rather than immediately vocational.

How convince an indolent pupil of this truth? State the chief problem of the teacher. Show that the pedagogical doctrines of this chapter are not to be classified under the head of "soft pedagogy." =Initial statement.= Life and words are so closely interwoven that we have only to study words with care in order to achieve an apprehension of life.

Among the many pedagogical questions raised and given new significance by the war, is that of the teaching about war and about peace. This is a question of ideals, and of values and the teaching of history. There are practical and superficial questions to be considered. There are also more profound problems, since all our teaching of good and evil is implicated.

The "Homes Without Hands," by the way, grew to have an added association in connection with a pedagogical failure on my part. In accordance with what I believed was some kind of modern theory of making education interesting and not letting it become a task, I endeavored to teach my eldest small boy one or two of his letters from the title-page.

We are gradually learning that social duties are not learned save through social deeds; that even the most carefully prepared and perfectly pedagogical systems of instruction fail, standing alone. The college student uses the laboratory method in his sociology though we know that sociology may be as far from social living as the poles are apart.

Classical literature is organized on this basis, which is called the pedagogical or psychological basis, and it seems desirable that other fields should also be. Yet there are other kinds of organization in which the relation to man is not so plainly, or not at all, taken as the controlling idea.

Schaffner's forte is after all the ground upon which he stood at the beginning; it is seen in the little idylls from the life of the laboring classes which make up the contents of his two collections, The Lantern and The Golden Oddity . In the first collection, the story of The Blacksmiths is a gem of narration; and so is the story here reproduced, The Iron Idol, which also serves to illustrate the pedagogical tendency of all of Schaffner's work.
