Yet if the Bishop had not this power, how profane was the pretension! Thus again I came into rude collision with English Prelacy. The year after taking my degree, I made myself fully master of Paley's acute and original treatise, the "Horæ Paulinæ," and realized the whole life of Paul as never before. This book greatly enlarged my mind as to the resources of historical criticism.

To put the case in another way. The root fallacy in Paley's argument consisted in reasoning from a particular to an universal.

Harper and Brothers, New York. Paley's "Natural Theology," familiar to students, is supplemented by this volume, which brings the argument down to the present developement of science. It is a book for thoughtful men and women, whose faith in the immortality of the soul needs strengthening. MOTHERS IN COUNCIL. 16mo., cloth, $1. Harper and Brothers, New York.

As they walked down the passage they passed many pairs of boots and shoes, some black and some brown, all side by side, and all different, even to the way in which they lay together. "I always think that people are so like their boots," said Miss Allan. "That is Mrs. Paley's " but as she spoke the door opened, and Mrs. Paley rolled out in her chair, equipped also for tea.

But to violate a trust could never become right under any change of circumstances. Coleridge, however, altogether overlooked this distinction: which, on the other hand, stirring in Paley's mind, but never brought out to distinct consciousness, nor ever investigated, nor limited, has undermined his system.

"He was truly a great creature," ruminated Mr. Rolles. "He knew the world as I know Paley's Evidences. There was nothing that he could not carry to a termination with his own hand, and against the largest odds. Heavens!" he broke out suddenly, "is not this the lesson? Must I not learn to cut diamonds for myself?"

He thinks it 'more agreeable to right reason' to explain the Biblical account of the creation by literal interpretation than 'on scientific principles, but adds the rider, 'so far as it can be reconciled with geological facts. He denies that the Pentateuch shows 'traces of Egyptian origin. He thinks that Paley's views of the 'essential doctrines of Christianity' are insufficient.

Everyone is aware of his revulsion from Paley's theology, which his father sternly proposed to read aloud to him, and of his noisy championing of the materialistic cause, in Queen Mab. But Shelley is also the best example that might be cited to prove the incompatibility of materialism and poetry.

When the doctrine is thus stated, Paley's objection, that we should also receive from nature the notions of the actions themselves, falls to the ground. As well might we require an instinctive notion of all possible numbers, to bear out our instinctive sense of proportion. A third limitation must be added, the influence of the principle of Association.

In order to pass the B.A. examination, it was also necessary to get up Paley's 'Evidences of Christianity, and his 'Moral Philosophy. This was done in a thorough manner, and I am convinced that I could have written out the whole of the 'Evidences' with perfect correctness, but not of course in the clear language of Paley.
