The will and the intelligence seek opposite ends: that we may absorb the world into ourselves, appropriate it to ourselves, is the aim of the will; that we may be absorbed into the world, that of the intelligence. Opposite ends? are they not rather one and the same? No, they are not, although they may seem to be so. The intelligence is monist or pantheist, the will monotheist or egoist.
A strict monotheist, he denounced the plurality of gods as an inconceivable error, asserting that of the all-powerful and all-perfect there could not, in the nature of things, be more than one; for, if there were only so many as two, those attributes could not apply to one of them, much less, then, if there were many.
"Why don't you ask God to bless him while you're at it?" "Listen, don't you think I know that your doctrine of cosmic mental states is just a front and that you're a closet monotheist?" "And may I remind you that slander is an offense punishable by law?" "And is this the state of a wise man?" asked the beard, looking at the sky, "to threaten his friend for speaking truth?" "Now he's even praying!
It used to be said that, as a Persian, he was a monotheist, and would consequently be in sympathy with the Jews; but the same cylinder already quoted shatters that idea, and shows him to have been a polytheist, ready to worship the gods of Babylon.
It may be significant of some attribute, or some union of attributes, which, being possessed by no object but one, determines the name exclusively to that individual. “The sun” is a name of this description; “God,” when used by a monotheist, is another.
The invasion of Cyrus a monotheist like themselves must have seemed to them a special providence from Jehovah; indeed, we know that it did, from the records in II. Chronicles xxxvi. 22, 23: "The Lord stirred up the spirit of Koresh, King of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing."
He said he had more sympathy with me on that account, as he was of Jewish descent, and a Monotheist. The noontide of the summer-day is past, when all Nature slumbers, and when the ancients feared to sing, lest the great god Pan should be awakened. Soft changes, the gradual shifting of every shadow on every leaf, begin to show the waning hours.
In so far as we attempt to represent eternal happiness to ourselves, we are confronted by a series of questions to which there is no satisfactory that is, rational answer, and it matters not whether the supposition from which we start be monotheist, or pantheist, or even panentheist. Let us return to the Pauline apocatastasis.
The learning of the 'Chaldeans' was largely ritualistic, and magic, incantations, divination, and mythology constituted a most important part of it. Did not the conscience, which could not swallow idolatrous food, resent being forced to assimilate idolatrous learning? No; for all that learning could be acquired by a faithful monotheist, and could be used against the system which gave it birth.
But petitions may be put up, not only to polytheistic gods, or to fetishes, but even to the one god of the monotheist, which never should be put up. 'Of thy goodness, slay mine enemies, is, in form, prayer: it is a desire, a petition to a god, implying recognition of the superiority of the divine power, implying adoration even.
