I shall certainly be able to ride to Dalswinton about the middle of next week, if I hear that you are not gone. I have the honour to be, Sir, your obliged humble servant, LXIII.-To REV. JOHN SKINNER. Edinburgh, October 25th, 1787. Reverend and Venerable Sir, Accept, in plain, dull prose, my most sincere thanks for the best poetical compliment I ever received.
LXIII. That the other articles of regulation, namely, the reform of the troops in number and in arrangement, the appointment of proper collectors for the revenues, and the general constitution of offices for the executive administration, were in like manner totally defeated by the said Hyder Beg Khân.
Its meaning was clearer than it had ever been before. "While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high." Then came the sermon, which was no sermon at all. True, I took a text, Isa. lxiii. 1, and I had a sermon in my mind.
Babylon sinks like a millstone in the great waters 'and I heard as it were a great voice of a great multitude in heaven saying, Hallelujah; salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for true and righteous are His judgments. The innermost impulse of judgment is love. 'In all their afflictions He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them' ISAIAH lxiii. 9.
"Thou, JEHOVAH, art OUR FATHER, our REDEEMER; thy name is from an age," Isaiah lxiii. 16. Again, "Jesus said, He that seeth ME, seeth the FATHER that sent ME," John xii. 45. "If ye have known ME, ye have known my FATHER also; and henceforth ye have known him, and have seen him," John xiv. 7.
LXIII. Now everybody else reckons the sailing away of Pompeius among the best military stratagems, but Cæsar wondered that Pompeius, who was in possession of a strong city and was expecting his troops from Iberia and was master of the sea, should desert and abandon Italy.
They shall at length be satisfied with his likeness, Psalm xvii. 15; yea, abundantly satisfied with the fatness of his house, Psalm xxxvi. 8; and with his goodness, Psalm lxv. 4; and that as with marrow and fatness, Psalm lxiii. 5. One sight of his glory will fully satisfy, and cause them to cry out, enough! Eighthly, He is the Truth, in opposition to all other ways of salvation: for,
First, Mercy ariseth from the bowels and compassion, from pity, and from a feeling of the condition of those in misery. "In his love, and in his pity, he saveth us." And again, "The Lord is pitiful, very pitiful, and of great mercy;" Isa. lxiii. 9; James v. 11. Now, where pity and compassion is, there is yearning of bowels; and where there is that, there is a readiness to help.
LXIII. The following instances of his resolution are equally, and even more remarkable.
In this manner, mixed with their own fugitives, such as the woods and mountains did not shelter were cut to pieces by our cavalry. When this battle was finished, Labienus returns to Agendicum, where the baggage of the whole army had been left: from it he marched with all his forces to Caesar. LXIII. The revolt of the Aedui being known, the war grows more dangerous.
