Men are such fools that they have but one name for a thousand meanings, and beggar the poor love-word to base kitchen usages and work-a-day desires. But I would keep it holy for the flame which it sometimes pleases heaven to light in one heart for the worship of another. I never knew what love was till I saw a girl's face on a May morning and wisdom stripped the rind from my naked heart.

He tried to write poetry for the magazines and permanently destroyed what little respect Kedzie had for the art. Hunting for some little love-word that was unimportant when found threw him into frenzies of rage. He went about mumbling gibberish. "What in hell rhymes with heaven?" he would snarl. "Beven, ceven, Devon, fevon, gevin, given " And so on to "zeven."

"Where are yoh, sweetheart?" He peered into the shadow where she had been, and saw the place empty. He laughed, chagrined by her elusiveness, yet hungering for her the more. "You not touch," she warned. "Till priest say marriage prayers, no man touch." He called her a devil in Spanish, and she thought it a love-word and laughed and came nearer.

I could see nothing of her face. She answered me in Turkish, which of course I could not understand. All I could say was Pek güzel, very beautiful, which I repeated amidst my French phrases, giving the words as passionate an accent as I could command. At last she seemed to relent, and as she bent towards me I expected that she was about to speak very softly some Turkish love-word.

As for me, I am loved as no man was ever loved yet. Madame Firmiani gives me more than happiness; she has inspired me with a delicacy of feeling I think I lacked. So I call her my dear conscience, a love-word which expresses certain secret harmonies within our hearts. I find honesty profitable; I shall get rich in time by myself.

"No!" she said "I would not be a traitor to you in so much as a thought! Had I loved anyone else I would never have married you, no! though you had been ten times a prince and king! No! You do not understand. I come to you heartwhole and passionless, without a single love-word chronicled in my girlhood's history, or a single incident you may not know.

To think the little chit should fancy an elegant Montereño could fall in love with her! Ah! ha! Oh, Dios! I hate thee, thou false man-of-the-world! Thou art the very picture of the men I have read about in the books of the Señor Dumas; and yet I was fooled by thy first love-word! But I never loved you. Never, never! It was only a fancy because you were from Monterey.

Love has no age. It swept over them, a young sweet tide. This man this woman. There was no one else in the world then. "Dear!" she whispered, matching her love-word to his, "and I never knew till a minute ago!" "I always knew. The shirt had no part in it! I have loved you since the world began and the morning stars sang!
