The first lesson for the diseased mental patient to learn is that if he wants to keep his mental balance or restore it, he must first inhibit all negative ideation and refuse to allow himself to be driven into wild bursts of psychical or mental energy along any one line. He must force himself to interest his mind in other things and to inhibit the over-active states of thinking.

Various stimuli coming through the pneumogastric nerves, either from above or from the peripheral endings in the stomach or intestines, may inhibit or slow the ventricular contractions. It seems to have been again shown, as was earlier understood, that there are inhibitory and accelerator ganglia in the heart itself, each subject to various kinds of stimulation and various kinds of depression.

The next year he stumped Massachusetts for "Zach" Taylor and heard Governor Seward deliver his remarkable speech on Slavery which contained this striking utterance: "Congress has no power to inhibit any duty commanded by God on Mount Sinai or by His Son on the Mount of Olives." On his return home Lincoln confessed that we had soon to deal with that question.

Ordinarily all tea, coffee and tobacco should be forbidden, and alcohol should be allowed only to the aged, if allowed at all. It has long been considered that iodin would inhibit abnormal connective tissue growth. Iodin most readily reaches the blood as sodium or potassium iodid. However important it may be that individuals be restrained or that they inhibit those impulses which might lead to anti-social activity, of even greater importance must be the part actually played by each member of the social group in the development of the common welfare.

"Does being his slave inhibit you from telling the truth about him?" Tanno queried. "If it is to his discredit, certainly," Agathemer answered. "Suppose it is to his credit, very much to his credit," Tanno pursued. "Then I am permitted to tell the truth," laughed Agathemer. "Then," said Tanno, "tell us the whole truth about Hedulio and Chryseros Philargyrus and the bull."

Moreover, the æsthetic spirit ought to be educated systematically, and above all, the whole education of the youth ought to be built on discipline; the lesson by which the youth learns to overcome the desire and to inhibit the will is the most essential for the young American of to-morrow.

Finally, in order that I might carry away no misapprehension, nor convey any, I asked him if it was the intention of the manifesto to inhibit any further plural marriage living. He answered, quaintly: "Why, of course, Frank because that's what they've been persecuting us for."

To shut these out, to inhibit the temporary "good" for the permanent good, is the measure of character. These sex and work situations we must take up in detail in separate chapters. What is important is that as life goes on, necessity, the social organization and gradual concentration of energy canalize the purposes, reduce the power of the irrelevant and temporary desires.

In our experiments the digits did not stand side by side, but followed one another very quickly in the same place. Similar experiments we made with colors and so on. Here, too, we found that quickly succeeding equal or very similar impressions have a tendency to inhibit each other or to fuse with each other.
