The resulting seedlings, without doubt the finest strain of modern times, were bought by V. H. Hallock and Son, Queens, N. Y., then the most extensive American bulb growers, and for many years the stock was worked up by them in the most painstaking manner. Before dissemination it was sold to J. L. Childs, Floral Park, N. Y., who introduced it to general cultivation under the name of Childsii.
A wide road ran along by the river bank, and upon the other side of this was a line of low warehouses, all occupied by the wine merchants; who purchased the produce of their vineyards from the growers and, after keeping it until it matured, supplied France and foreign countries with it. Several ships lay by the wharves. Some were bound for England, others for Holland.
The South Jersey plan of growing and setting plants gets them into the field in the best condition of any method I know. The display in the fall of 1904 attracted a great deal of attention, not alone from visitors, but also from the superintendents of horticulture from the other States and from fruit growers in general.
There are now no vast areas of land comparable with those of North and South America awaiting the pioneer wheat growers, and consequently there is no likelihood of any repetition of the over-production characteristic of the period of 1874-1894.... "At a rough estimate the careful use of artificials might increase the average yield of the acre from four quarters up to five....
The usual and marketable size of a bunch was from one to two pounds weight. The fruit was always perfect that was offered for sale. Science had provided the fruit growers of Mizora with permanent protections from all kinds of blight or decay. When I considered the wholesomeness of all kinds of food prepared for the inhabitants of this favored land.
The tree may abide in the soil and be just alive, but it is not until the essence of the soil enters into and abides in the tree, that it really grows and bears fruit. Growers of the finest varieties will show you plums that look as if they had been frosted with silver, and peaches with cheeks like the first blush of dawn.
