Professor Dowden's book on 'Shakespeare's Mind and Art' gives the most popular expression to this view, a view which is also held by Mr. Ten Brink, by Sir I. Gollancz, and, to a great extent, by Dr. Brandes.
The allegorical significance of the Song of Songs goes back to the Targum, an English version of which has been published by Professor H. Gollancz in his "Translations from Hebrew and Aramaic" . Though the present writer differs entirely from the opinion of Graetz on this point, he has no hesitation in describing Graetz's Commentary as a masterpiece of brilliant originality.
One of the most comforting qualities of books has been well expressed by Richard of Bury in his famous Philobiblon, written in 1344. Israel Gollancz has now edited in an exquisite edition, attainable for the sum of one shilling. "How safely," says Richard, "we lay bare the poverty of human ignorance to books, without feeling any shame."
In a few passages Cynewulf uses each rune to represent not only a letter but a word beginning with that letter. 'There is no doubt of the authorship of this play, writes Professer Gollancz in his notes to Lamb's Specimens, "J. S." is certainly an error for "E. S." I have found in a MS. in the British Museum Sir E. Sherburne's preface to this play. Professer Gollancz deserves credit for having unearthed the interesting document referred to, but an examination of it at once destroys his theory.
