In the presence of such a mood, and, indeed, in the presence of nearly all his great dramatic Passions, it is Nietzsche, and not his humorous critic, who is "with Our Lord" in Gethsemane. One does not drink of the cup of Fate "lovingly" without bloody sweat!

How can they assume infallibility in respect to poor men, when they have on their conscience the great mistake of Gethsemane? Jesus, it will be seen, limited his action entirely to the Jews.
There was more, however, it is easy to see, in the agony which prompted this cry than the merely physical. If in Gethsemane we have the effort of the will of Jesus, as it raised itself into unity with the will of the Father, we here see the effort of His mind as, amidst the confusion and contradictions of the cross, it finally rose into unity with the mind of God.
"Ah, you are one of the doubting!" she returned kindly. "Don't you know that sweet hymn about feeding our lamps from the olive-trees of Gethsemane? The idea is taken from the lamp the prophet Zechariah saw in his vision, into which two olive-branches, through two golden pipes, emptied the golden oil out of themselves. If we are thus one with the olive-tree, the oil cannot fail us.
Toward the middle of Lent the Society of the Holy Gethsemane was visited by its ecclesiastical Visitor. This was the Bishop of the diocese, a liberal-minded man and not a very rigid ecclesiastic, abrupt, brusque, businesslike, and a good administrator.
He went down into Galilee, down through Samaria and Perea, down to Jerusalem, down to Gethsemane and to Golgotha, fearless, calm, sustained and nourished by that secret food which satisfied His heart in doing the will of God. It was in the quest of this Jesus, in the hope of somehow drawing nearer to Him, that we made our pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
She opened it, put on her spectacles, and read: "There is the peace of surrendered, as well as of fulfilled, hopes, the peace, not of satisfied, but of extinguished longings, the peace, not of the happy love and the secure fireside, but of unmurmuring and accepted loneliness, the peace, not of the heart which lives in joyful serenity afar from trouble and from strife, but of the heart whose conflicts are over, and whose hopes are buried, the peace of the passionless as well as the peace of the happy; not the peace which brooded over Eden, but that which crowned Gethsemane."
