Is anything further necessary to convince you what a peculiarly wicked and horrible humbug this fellow was? If we had followed this impostor home, we should have found him lodged, during most of his stay in New-York city, with one or the other of his three chief disciples. These were Pierson, who commonly attended him abroad, Folger, and for a time only Mills.

It happened, however, that Folger had expended the last shot in the carbine on the Colonel's horse; but, as the orderly did not know it, it was just as well for Folger as though more ammunition had been on hand. The recently-made prisoner was compelled to assist his Colonel from the vat.

In 1882, Mr. Cleveland was nominated for the high position of Governor of New York, in opposition to Charles J. Folger, a man of high character, formerly chief justice of the Court of Appeals, and at the time of the contest, secretary of the treasury under President Arthur. For reasons into which we cannot enter here, but which, though purely political, gave good cause for public discontent, Mr.

Peter Folger had sent out from the fogs of Nantucket a defiant and rollicking voice; John Rogers and Urian Oakes, both poets and both Harvard presidents, had done something better than mere rhyme, but it remained for another pastor, teacher and physician to sound a note that roused all New England.

Gordon spied the soft, crayon likeness of Benjamin Franklin on the wall, as she stepped into the house, her historical pulse quickened to such an extent that she then and there determined to hunt up more about the Folgers; for was not Benjamin Franklin's mother a Folger and born on this island?

At first Captain Folger refused this offer, but on consideration he allowed Jack to go, promising at the same time to keep as near to the shore as possible, so that if there was anything like treachery he might have a chance of swimming off. "So your father is dead?" asked the captain, as he walked with Thursday to the side. "Yes, long, long ago." "But you called Adams `father' just now.

The account which they transmitted home of this newly-discovered colony was, strange to say, as little attended to by government as that of Captain Folger, and nothing more was heard of Adams and his family for nearly twelve years, when, in 1825, Captain Beechey, in the Blossom, bound on a voyage of discovery to Behring Strait, touched at Pitcairn's Island.

"Where d'ye hail from, an' what's your name?" he asked, as Charlie made fast to the rope which was thrown to them. "The Topaz, from America, Captain Folger," answered the captain, with a smile.

Thirty years of this connection have greatly uplifted the whole school system of the State, and made the university a life-giving power in it; while this uplifting of the school system has enabled the university steadily to raise and improve its own standard of instruction. But during the earlier period of our plans there was one serious obstacle Charles James Folger.

The young judge who officiated on this occasion was none other than a personage who will be mentioned with great respect more than once in these reminiscences, Charles James Folger, afterward my colleague in the State Senate, Chief Justice of the State and Secretary of the Treasury of the United States.
