It contained a post-office, tavern, blacksmith's shop, "general store," and express-office, scarcely a dozen buildings in all, but all differing from Collinson's Mill in some vague suggestion of vitality, as if the daily regular pulse of civilization still beat, albeit languidly, in that remote extremity.
More than this, it was finally whispered that the draft was returned to him as his letters had been, and that he was ashamed to reclaim the money at the express-office. "It wouldn't be a bad specilation to go East, get some smart gal, for a hundred dollars, to dress herself up and represent that 'Hag, and jest freeze onto that eight thousand," suggested a far-seeing financier.
But it took more than this to discourage Larry, heartened as he was by the remembrance of his visions of the day before; and on and on he went, until, at last, in answer to his question and just as he was about to withdraw his head from the door of the express-office into which he had popped it a moment before he was bidden to say what it was he could do.
There was anticipation and accomplishment twice a day; and as Key and Collinson rode up to the express-office, the express-wagon was standing before the door ready to start to meet the stagecoach at the cross-roads three miles away. This again seemed a special providence to Key.
"Do you know what day to-morrow is?" Gertrude was opening a box of flowers that Solomon had brought from the express-office; Glover, plastered with bandages, was standing before the grate fire in the hotel parlor. "To-morrow?" he echoed. "Sunday." "Sunday! Why do you always guess Sunday when I ask you what day it is?"
It was a new experience. "You mean it?" he asked. "Yes, give me your hand. Now that you are decent I want to shake it. That is the only way we can help each other." Kitty was poring over her accounts when Felix arrived at the express-office and made his way to her sitting-room.
