To me there is something infinitely touching in these shrines to the Virgin, with all their associations of suffering and prayer, in their little ex-voto pictures, and flowers, and lighted tapers.
There are some ex-voto pictures of the Madonna of Mercy, which record individual acts of gratitude. The mother kneels on one side, with eyes uplifted, in faith and trembling supplication. The same idea I have seen repeated in a picture by Lanfranco. The innumerable votive pictures which represent the Madonna di Misericordia with the Child in her arms, I shall notice hereafter.
Dorothea, kneeling, holds up her basket of celestial fruit, gathered for her in paradise. When St. Thus, in a charming picture by Palma, she appears before the Virgin, accompanied by St. Mark a protector of Venice. Ex-voto pictures in this style are very interesting, and the votary, without any striking impropriety, makes one of the Arcadian group. Very appropriate, too, is the marriage of St.
This token was usually made of stone, though often of wood, and in later times of terra-cotta, of cast and wrought iron and even of gold. Under the direct influence of such a cult, other objects appealed to the imagination or served the temporary purpose of the worshipper as ex-voto to hang up in the shrines, such as the mushroom, awabi, various other shells and possibly the fire-drill.
After having paid its price into the Treasury of the Church, he hung the jewel, as an ex-voto, on the altar of the chapel of the Virgin, where he often went to pray for the poor mason.
Ambrogio Borgognone 1506. Below are the apostles and empty tomb; at each side, St. Ambrose and St. Augustine; behind them, St. Cosimo and St. Damian; the introduction of these saintly apothecaries stamps the picture as an ex-voto perhaps against the plague. It is very fine, expressive, and curious. F. Granacci. 1530. The Virgin, ascending in glory, presents her girdle to St.
Fifteen times the guns have roused the many echoes of the cemetery, shaken the wreaths of jet and everlasting flowers the light ex-voto offerings suspended at the corners of the monuments and while a reddish mist floats and rolls with a smell of gunpowder across the city of the dead, ascends and mingles slowly with the smoke of factories in the plebeian district, the innumerable assembly disperses also, scattered through the steep streets, down the lofty steps all white among the foliage, with a confused murmur, a rippling as of waves over rocks.
Before the little shrine I notice, besides the usual Kitzuki ex-voto of seaweed, several little effigies of horses made of straw. Why these offerings of horses of straw?
A dancing stage extends the whole length of its front, and this opens into a hall full of ex-voto pictures, some of which possess great artistic merit. Directly behind this main temple are several other temples and an eleven-storied pagoda which it is impossible to describe here adequately. On our homeward way we visited the Art Museum.
