The ellipsis is the zig-zag of the phrase. Corinthe gradually dethroned the Pot-aux-Roses. The last proprietor of the dynasty, Father Hucheloup, no longer acquainted even with the tradition, had the post painted blue.
It may be a parabola, an ellipsis, spiral, circular, &c. this will depend on the impulse, it receives, and the powers by which it is impelled.
The English supplement, "the kingdoms," is justified and required, equally by the sense and the laws of syntax: and he is a deceiver, if a scholar, who insists upon any other, to supply the ellipsis. Indeed, the omission of similar supplements, has occasioned needless obscurity to the unlearned in other parts of this book.
Cicero nearly always uses two different verbs; i.e. he says aiunt dicere and the like. AT: there is an ellipsis here such as 'those young men's muscles are powerful but .... This elliptic use of at is common in sudden exclamations of grief, annoyance, surprise etc. VERO: this is common in emphatic replies, whether the reply convey assent, or, as here, a retort.
"Surely you should answer, or " The ellipsis was suggestive, but impotent. After a painful moment came the response: "Or take the consequences, major?" Then slowly "Very well, sir I must take them."
It is a fiction by the same title as the PRODUCTIVITY OF CAPITAL. Labor produces, capital has value: and when, by a sort of ellipsis, we say the value of labor, we make an enjambement which is not at all contrary to the rules of language, but which theorists ought to guard against mistaking for a reality.
The formula for introductions may be abbreviated to a mere announcement of the two names: "Mr. Smith Mrs. Jones" the pause and inflection filling the ellipsis; and really, upon the tone and manner depends the courtesy of the introduction so barren of phrasing. A formal presentation is made in this form: "Miss Smith, allow me to present Mr. Jones."
And though Miss Sullivan did not force grammatical completeness upon the first finger-lispings of her pupil, yet when she herself repeated Helen's sentence, "mamma milk," she filled out the construction, completed the child's ellipsis and said, "Mamma will bring Helen some milk."
At the two extremities of the port, in order that their fires should converge upon the great axis of the ellipsis formed by the basin, in the first place, two batteries had been raised, evidently destined to receive flank pieces, for D'Artagnan saw the workmen finishing the platform and making ready the demi-circumference in wood upon which the wheels of the pieces might turn to embrace every direction over the epaulement.
On the other hand, you ... Hand me that pistol, Calendar, butt first, please. Look sharp, my man! If you don't..." He left the ellipsis to be filled in by the corpulent blackguard's intelligence. The latter, gray eyes still intent on the younger man's face, wavered, plainly impressed, but still wondering. "Quick! I'm not patient to-night..." No longer was Calendar of two minds.
