God distributeth sorrows in his anger. They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away. God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it. His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty. For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
I do not treat of good works as if the doing of them would save us, for we are justified by his grace, according to the hope of eternal life; yet our sins and evil works will lay us obnoxious to the judgments both of God and man. How can he that carrieth himself basely in the sight of men, think he yet well behaveth himself in the sight of God?
"We will not follow him," say the knights, "For it is King Arthur himself that is carrying off the head, and no power have we to do evil to him nor other sith that he hath passed the bar. But you shall aby it that let him go when he was so nigh you!" They rush in upon him and slay him and cut him up, and each one carrieth off his piece the same as they had done with the other.
He goeth forth to the mastery of this Event as go many, armed with nought other than their own conceit: and 'tis written: "Fools from their fate seek not to urge: The coxcomb carrieth his scourge." So Feshnavat smoothed his face, and said, 'Is't not also written? "Oft may the fall of fools make wise men moan! Too often hangs the house on one loose stone!"
It will be a gracious deed that he and all his pestiferous works, which he carrieth about, might be taken, to the salvation of his soul, opening of many privy heresies, and extinction of the same."
Certaine have hidden them, in the secreteste place of their bodies: other have hidden them in the collor of a Dogge, that is familiare with hym, whiche carrieth theim: Some have written in a letter ordinarie thinges, and after betwene thone line and thother, have also written with water, that wetyng it or warming it after, the letters should appere.
And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.
Now stand the scales poised and at rest: three heavy questions have I thrown in; three heavy answers carrieth the other scale. Voluptuousness: unto all hair-shirted despisers of the body, a sting and stake; and, cursed as "the world," by all backworldsmen: for it mocketh and befooleth all erring, misinferring teachers.
Thus holy men have cried before thee, and by crying have prevented judgment. Before I leave this use, let me give thee a few things, that, if God will, may provoke thee to fear the Lord. The man that feareth not God, carrieth it worse towards him than the beast, the brute beast, doth carry it towards that man. Mark, all my creatures shall fear you, and dread you, says God.
Thus, you see what virtue there is in an absolute promise; it carrieth enough in its own bowels to accomplish the thing promised, whether there be means or no in us to effect it.
