In spite of violent thunderstorms, seriously interfering with artillery activity, fighting continued in this sector on July 14 and 15, 1916. Italian troops made some progress on the southern slopes of Sogli Bianchi, south of Borcola and the Corno di Coston and in the Boin Valley, where they occupied Vanzi on the northern slopes of Monte Hellugio.
The Cerchi and the leaders of the Bianchi faction had acquired universal hatred by having, while at the head of the republic, conducted themselves with unbecoming pride; and this induced Corso and the banished of the Neri party to return to Florence, knowing well that Charles and the Captains of the Parts were favorable to them.
As in Italy, Guelphs and Ghibellines as in Florence, the Neri and Bianchi as in Holland, the Hooks and Cabbeljaws had, by their unfortunate quarrels, armed fellow countrymen and families against each other so also, nothing was so powerful as religious difference to set friend against friend, father against son, husband against wife.
He now set himself first to make Lucca secure, and for this he built a fortress in the city; and then to possess himself of Pistoja for he even thought thereby to gain a foothold in Florence herself and for this he entered into correspondence secretly with both the Neri and the Bianchi there.
Pistoia was divided, as it always had been, into the Bianchi and Neri parties; the head of the Bianchi was Bastiano di Possente, and of the Neri, Jacopo da Gia. Each of these men held secret communications with Castruccio, and each desired to drive the other out of the city; and, after many threatenings, they came to blows.
For her sake he practised her favourite instrument, the guitar, and worked miracles with it as with the violin. At the age of twenty, Paganini broke the spell and resumed his gipsying, persuading the public, and not without reason, that he was aided by magic. He lived for many years with the singer, Antonia Bianchi, who bore him a son, Achille, whom he legitimised.
Both parties remained in Florence, and equally discontented; the Neri from seeing their enemies at hand, and apprehending the loss of their power, and the Bianchi from finding themselves without either honor or authority; and to these natural causes of animosity new injuries were added.

"We can return to Florence," said the man, whose bass voice sounded soft as he spoke in Italian. "What is that you say?" asked the old man. "The Bianchi are triumphant." "Are you not mistaken?" asked the poet. "No, dear Dante!" replied the soldier, whose warlike tones rang with the thrill of battle and the exultation of victory. "To Florence! To Florence!
Captain Havelock, who dates only from 1881, has the reputation of being slightly 'black. The Neri and the Bianchi factions here represent the Buffs and Blues of a land further north. He is yet in the heyday of popularity, when, in the consecrated phrase, the ruler 'gains golden opinions. But colonial judgments are fickle, and mostly in extremes.
