It says: One day in June, 1822, a beautiful Indian maiden offered him a pair of moccasins if he would procure for her an antelope skin, and bring the animal's brains with it, in order that she might dress a deerskin. Beckwourth started out in his mission, but failed to see any antelope.
All the leading men and braves assembled in council, and Beckwourth, as their great medicine-man, was consulted as to what kind of an offering should be made which would effect its purpose of appeasing the wrath that was consuming the tribe. Beckwourth retired for a while from the council, telling the chiefs he must consult his medicine.
Auberry was his name, and as I talked with him he told me of days passed with my heroes Fremont, Carson, Ashley, Bill Williams, Jim Bridger, even the negro ruffian Beckwourth all men of the border of whose deeds I had read. Auberry had trapped from the St. Mary's to the sources of the Red, and his tales, told in simple and matter-of-fact terms, set my very blood atingle.
Beckwourth, who relates the story of the trip, makes no suggestion of any far-off destination, nor does he say they took their packs along, as they would have done if going to a commercial centre. It seems to have been purely a trapping expedition, and was probably the very first attempt to navigate Green River.
The Crow chief at the time of the visit of Captain Williams' party to their nation was Ara-poo-ish, who was succeeded by the famous Jim Beckwourth, who remained at the head of the tribe for many years. When Captain Williams arrived at the headwaters of the Platte, the party met with another disaster.
Beckwourth claims to have been the original projector of the fort, and to have given the general plan and its name, in which I am inclined to believe that he is correct; perhaps Barclay, Doyle, and Simpson were connected with him, as he states that there were other trappers, though he mentions no names.
Or was it a miracle that the buffalo were gradually exterminated? killed with so little remorse that the hides, among the Indians themselves, were known by the appellation of 'A pint of whiskey." Beckwourth claims to have established the Pueblo where the beautiful city of Pueblo, Colorado, is now situated.
As Kit Carson and Colonel Boone were the only Indian agents whom I ever knew or heard of that dealt honestly with the various tribes, as they were always ready to acknowledge, and the withdrawal of the former by the government was the cause of a great war, so also Beckwourth was an honest Indian trader.
Colonel Boone, the Bents, Carson, Maxwell, and others ascribed to him no such traits as those given by Parkman, and as to his honesty, it is an unquestioned fact that Beckwourth was the most honest trader among the Indians of all who were then engaged in the business.
Beckwourth says of this: "The current, at a small distance from our camp, became exceedingly rapid, and drew toward the centre from each shore." The river here narrows suddenly and attacks a high ridge. Doubling around a point to the left and then as suddenly to the right, the swift water or "Suck" slackens up in the quieter reach of Flaming Gorge.
