To be sure, France was having much trouble with her Flemish cities, which were in revolt again under the noted brewer-nobleman, Van Artevelde, yet it seemed presumption for England to attack her England, so feeble that she had been unable to avenge her own defeat by the half-barbaric Scots at Bannockburn. But the English had not nearly so small an opinion of themselves as had the rest of Europe.
The travellers now passed the memorable field of Bannockburn and reached the Torwood, a place glorious or terrible to the recollections of the Scottish peasant, as the feats of Wallace or the cruelties of Wude Willie Grime predominate in his recollection.
The road by which the English would advance was the old Roman causeway running nearly north and south. The Bannock Burn was fordable from a spot near the Park Mill down to the village of Bannockburn. Above, the banks were too high and steep to be passed; while below, where ran the Bannock through the carse, the swamps prevented passage.

The charge, as disorderly and as badly directed as the fatal attack of Bannockburn, never reached the English ranks. It took the Austrians seventy years to forget that lesson, and when a later generation sent a second army into the mountains it was overthrown at Sempach. Swiss liberty was established on an unarguable basis. A similar tale might be told of Bannockburn, where, under Bruce, the Scotch common folk regained their freedom from the English.
