But there was that in the expression of the man who spoke them which showed there was no lack of realisation there. How often I have recalled them, with a sore heart, in these recent weeks of heavy losses in the air-service losses due, I have no doubt, to the special claims upon it of the German retreat. The conversation dropped a little, till one of my companions, with a smile, pointed overhead.

There were artillerymen, infantrymen, marines, in training for the naval air-service, cavalrymen, all wearing the uniforms of the arm to which they originally belonged. No one was dressed in a uniform which distinguished him as an aviator; and upon making inquiry, I found that there is no official dress for this branch of the service.

This vessel is still doing valuable duty, being attached to the British air-service in France.

A Turkish air-service was instituted, at the head of which was Major Serno, a Prussian officer, and Turkish aviators are now in training at Ostend, where they will very usefully defend their native country.

How few of us, except those who have relatives or dear friends in the air-service, realise at all the conditions of this fighting its daring, its epic range, its constant development! All the men in it are young. None of them can have such a thing as a nerve. Anyone who betrays the faintest suspicion of one in his first flights is courteously but firmly returned to his regiment.

We do not know whether or not all these things passed through his mind, but we do know that among his thoughts was the fond sister, working and praying in Boston, and a brother fitting himself for the air-service, and a lovely mother walking and praying in her lonely home.

Other bombs fall, heavy explosions result, and Fritz finds that his night's rest is lost in general turmoil. This continues night after night and the damage to German morale is enormous. From the point of view of the air-service, things are different. These night raids are a matter of course with the pilots. It is part of the regular work.

But as I listened, I thought of the time which must come soon, when the air, as the sea, will be filled with stately ships, and how the air-service will develop its own peculiar type of men, and build up about them its own laws and its own traditions.
