In the present day, the constitution of a country and people is not represented as so entirely dependent on free and deliberate choice. The fundamental, but abstractly and therefore imperfectly, entertained conception of freedom, has resulted in the republic being very generally regarded in theory as the only just and true political constitution.
His face was hidden by the raised lid as he peered, examining his instruments. He spoke abstractly. "Magnificent." When he left the room Charlotte followed him. "Billy " "Well " He stopped in his noiseless course down the corridor. "What was it?" she said. "What happened?" He didn't pretend not to understand her. "Oh, nothing. Conway and Mrs. Rankin didn't hit it off very well together."
The Quakers do not deny that instrumental music is capable of exciting delight. They are not insensible either of its power or of its charms. They throw no imputation on its innocence, when viewed abstractly by itself; but they do not see anything in it sufficiently useful, to make it an object of education, or so useful, as to counterbalance other considerations, which make for its disuse.
Abstractly it might seem remarkable that this should be so, but the peculiar nature of property of all sorts is that it becomes the inmost shrine of its possessor's being, and when the shrine is robbed or desecrated, the injured personality resents the outrage with bitterness.
The beliefs which they accompany 'posit' the assumed reality, 'correspond' and 'agree' with it, and 'fit' it in perfectly definite and assignable ways, through the sequent trains of thought and action which form their verification, so merely to insist on using these words abstractly instead of concretely is no way of driving the pragmatist from the field, his more concrete account virtually includes his critic's.
Northway shuffled, sucked in his cheeks, and spoke in as civil a tone as he could command. "There are difficulties, I know. I don't ask her to come at once and live with me. I couldn't expect that. But I am determined she sha'n't go back to Mr. Quarrier. I have a right to forbid it." "Indeed abstractly speaking I think you have," murmured Mrs. Wade, with a glance towards the door.
Not abstractly eternal as hitherto considered, time and space are relative and finite factors, deriving their measurement validity only in reference to the yardstick of light-velocity. In joining space as a dimensional relativity, time has surrendered age-old claims to a changeless value. Time is now stripped to its rightful nature-a simple essence of ambiguity!
So he sits and ponders, abstractly, vaguely, upon everything in general, synonym, alas, to man's finite mind, for nothing in particular, till even the sense of self seems to vanish, and through the mist-like portal of unconsciousness he floats out into the vast indistinguishable sameness of Nirvana's sea.
Tools and capital, land and labor, considered individually and abstractly, are not, literally speaking, productive.
But what we thus immediately experience or concretely divine is very limited in duration, whereas abstractly we are able to conceive eternities. Could we feel a million years concretely as we now feel a passing minute, we should have very little employment for our conceptual faculty.
