'Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, the peace of God that passeth all understanding. Paul. John Bunyan is always at his very best in allegory. In some other departments of work John Bunyan has had many superiors; but when he lays down his head on his hand and begins to dream, as we see him in some of the old woodcuts, then he is alone; there is no one near him.
Photographs have spread widely these fine woodcuts, and there is, at least, one which I think my readers may have seen, 'The Bearing of the Cross, in which the blessed Saviour sinks under his burden. In the series of the Life of the Virgin there is a 'Repose in Egypt, which has a naïve homeliness in its grace and serenity.
There is considerable invention, but great lack of grace, in all these designs; they bear, however, strong resemblances to the leading characteristics of Wohlgemuth’s paintings, and they are superior to the woodcuts that preceded him, particularly as regards the amount of finish and chiaroscuro they exhibit.
Much of this ingenuity his son inherited, and his first artistic effort was an attempt to reproduce the woodcuts in his school books by engraving them on little plates which he had beaten out of copper cents.
The writer of these pages vividly remembers making its acquaintance at an early stage of his education a very fat, stumpy-looking book, bound in boards covered with green paper, and having in the text very small woodcuts, of the most primitive sort.

While some nine years before Quentell's German translation, the Abbot Niccolo Malermi published his Biblia Vulgare in the Italian vernacular, which went through twenty editions in less than a century: one of which, brought out at Venice in 1490 by the Giunta Brothers, was illustrated by woodcuts of the greatest beauty.
