Kames's Sketches, i. 363. Mr. Croker says: 'Here I think the censure is quite unjust. Lord Kames gives in the clearest terms the same explanation. Kames made many corrections in the later editions. On turning to the first, I found, as I expected, that Johnson's censure was quite just.
He speaks of having had to abandon "old and long cherished ideas, which constituted the charm to me of the theoretical part of the science in my earlier day, when I believed with Pascal in the theory, as Hallam terms it, of 'the arch-angel ruined." See the same sentiment in the letter to Darwin, March 11, 1863, page 363:
It is the most beautiful of all the gates of the city, little, too, and still keeps its fresco of the fourteenth century. Constable, 1906. See p. 363.

The Persian system of monarchy, introduced by Diocletian, was distasteful to the philosophic mind of Julian; he refused the title of lord and master, and attempted to restore in all its pristine simplicity the ancient government of the republic. In a campaign against the Persians he received a mortal wound, and died on June 26, 363.
Dramatic art grew up during this period. We have seen that dramatic exhibitions were introduced in the year 363, from Etruria, at a time of pestilence, but they were mere pantomimes. Now plays began to be written. Trustworthy history begins at the time of the Punic wars, and the annals of Fabius Pictor commence with the year 216, after the battle of Cannæ.
