We will, therefore, give one of these at full length, leaving our readers to judge of it as an "exact reference:" "Vattius Epagathus, one of the brethren who abounded in the fulness of the love of God and man, and whose walk and conversation had been so unexceptionable, though he was only young, shared in the same testimony with the elder Zacharias.

Then the angel told Mary that her cousin Elizabeth was soon to have a child, through the power of the Lord. And when Mary heard all this, she said: "I am the servant of the Lord, to do his will. Let it be to me as you have said." When the angel had given his message and had gone away, Mary rose up in haste and made a journey to the home of Zacharias and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth, we have a view into the interior of her house, through arcades richly sculptured; and within, Zacharias is reading, and the handmaids of Elizabeth, are spinning and sewing. This elegant fresco was painted for Alexander VI. There is a fine picture of this subject, by Andrea Sabattini of Salerno, the history of which is rather curious.

At this moment the old man appeared descending the hillside in the shade of the pines with a brisk step. As far off as Yeri could make himself heard, he called out, his glass in his hand: "Here is to the best man I know! Here is to our benefactor." And Zacharias smiled.

And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he himself made signs to them, and continued deaf and dumb. And it came to pass, when the days of his ministry were fulfilled, he went to his own house.

I shall not break in upon his own account, which is by much the best that can be given, and therefore desire what I can, to avoid saying anything of what is said already, as to the particular passages of his coming forth: but, in general, when he was somewhat above twenty, he left his friends, and visited the most retired and religious people in those parts; and some there were in this nation, who waited for the consolation of Israel, night and day; as Zacharias, Anna, and good old Simeon did of old time.

"Do not be frightened, Charlotte," he said, "I have come to tell you some good news. My father will be here tomorrow." He received no response, for the reason that Zacharias was trying to light the lamp. "Where are you, Charlotte?" "Here I am," cried the old man turning with a livid face and gazing fiercely at his rival.

It is also the gospel of praise and of prayer, expressions of the deepest convictions and longings of the human heart. The Gospel opens with a scene in the Temple at the hour of incense and with theMagnificatof Mary and the songs of Zacharias and of the angels. It closes with the benediction of the ascending Lord and the thanksgiving of his joyful disciples.

Then stood forth one of our brethren, Vettius Epagathus, full of love towards God and his neighbor, living a life so pure and strict that, young as he was, men held him to be the equal of the aged Zacharias.

The same angelic being who had spoken to Zacharias speaks again, not now to an aged and distinguished priest amidst the splendors of the Temple in Jerusalem, but to a humble maiden betrothed to a carpenter in an obscure village of Galilee.
