There are several varieties, including A. canadensis rotundifolia, A. canadensis oblongifolia, and A. canadensis oligocarpa, the latter being by some botanists ranked as a species. A. VULGARIS. Common Amelanchier. South of Europe, 1596. This is the only European species, and grows about 16 feet in height. It has been in cultivation in this country for nearly 300 years.
They are recommended as vulnerary medicines, and in all cases where mild astringents or corroborants are proper. ALCHEMILLA vulgaris. LADY'S MANTLE. The Leaves. These discover to the taste a moderate astringency, and were formerly much esteemed in some female weaknesses, and in fluxes of the belly.
There is one specimen in the Museum. COMMON BUZZARD. Buteo vulgaris, Leach. French, "Buse." The Buzzard is a tolerably regular, and by no means uncommon, autumnal visitant, specimens occurring from some of the Islands almost every autumn. But it is, I believe, an autumnal visitant only, as I do not know of a single specimen taken at any other time of year, nor can I find a record of one.
Besides that, the Bachelorum Vulgaris is apt to fall into the poison-ivy, lose his hair, teeth, charm and digestion, and die at the top. The other sort is wedded to his work; for man is a molecule in the mass and must be wedded to something. To be wedded to your work is to live long and well.
It is the Margaritifera vulgaris, claimed to belong to the animal kingdom, and not to the fish family, and is never eaten. The eminent marine biologist in the service of the Ceylon government, Professor Hornell, F. L. S., who intimately knows the habits of the pearl-oyster of the East, advances two interesting if not startling premises.
It is an evergreen of the most pleasing hue, and will cover any low fences or brick-work in a short space of time. The flowers, which are purple, form a pleasing variety in the spring months. BETA vulgaris.
But Stumper roared at them. "A snail shell!" he boomed; "of course it's a snail shell! But did you ever see such a snail shell in your lives before? Look at the colour! Look at the shape! Put it against your ears and hear it singing!" He was furious with their lack of appreciation. "It's the common sort," said Uncle Felix, braver than the others, "something or other vulgaris "
But a large number of species are common to both regions, and here the difference of course is most striking. Lotus corniculatus and Calamintha Acinos, Calluna vulgaris and Campanula rotundifolia may be quoted as instances, and every botanist who has visited alpine regions may add other examples.
We have a fine variety of this plant with scarlet blossoms, and also one with double flowers, both of which are singularly ornamental to the shrubbery. ARBUTUS Uva Ursi. BEAR-BERRIES. A small trailing plant of great repute as a medicine, but of no use in any other respect. BERBERIS vulgaris.
