It is an interesting fact that Madame Mathilde Marchesi, author of a noted vocal method, 24 books of Vocalises, a volume of reminiscences, and other works, and once famed as a singer, is only five years younger than Madame Viardot-Garcia, but at seventy-six is still teaching still shining as an authority on the art of song. Singers seem often to have been long-lived.

Such teachers as Mme. Viardot-Garcia and Mme. Marchesi have done much good, and trained many excellent lyric vocalists; but Mme.

She was also a poetess of some renown, and her collection of verse won a prize from the French Academy. Pauline Viardot-Garcia was one of a remarkable musical family. Her father, Manuel Garcia, was a singer and teacher of note, and, like her elder sister, Mme. Malibran, she received the benefit of his tuition.

In this form it was brought out at the Paris Académie, Aug. 2, 1774. In 1859 it was revived in Paris, for which occasion Berlioz restored the original alto part for Mme. Viardot-Garcia.
