Somewhat later, from 1823 to 1826, Esmangart and Johanneau issued a variorum edition in nine volumes, in which the text is often encumbered by notes which are really too numerous, and, above all, too long. The work was an enormous one, but the best part of it is Le Duchat's, and what is not his is too often absolutely hypothetical and beside the truth.

You're not the only one, I'll tell you that. There's many a man hoeing tobacco over-seas that should be mounting his horse at his own door at home; many and many! And life is all a variorum, at the best. Look at me: I'm a laird's son and more than half a doctor, and here I am, man-Jack to Hoseason!" I thought it would be civil to ask him for his story. He whistled loud. "Never had one," said he.

The reader will find several allusions to this custom in the variorum edition of Shakspeare, K. Henry IV., part 2. Paul's church by eleven, and walk in the middle isle till twelve, and after dinner from three to six; during which time some discoursed of business, others of news."

Horace Howard Furness, perhaps the finest Shakespearean scholar in America, and editor of the "Variorum Shakespeare," which Henry considered the best of all editions "the one which counts." It was in Boston, I think, that I disgraced myself at one of Dr. Furness's lectures.

It was natural that Voltaire should come in for his share of slander. All Mr. Watkinson can see in him is that he wrote "an unseemly poem," by which we presume he means La Pucelle. But he ought to know that the grosser parts of that poem were added by later hands, as may be seen at a glance in any variorum edition.

Had this occurred in Shakspeare, instead of Bacon, we should have had a series of variorum notes like this: Vol. "That sixpence was the word used by our author scarcely admits of doubt. From a number of parallel passages we select the following: 'Live on sixpence a day, and earn it. Abernethy. 'I give thee sixpence? I will see thee and-so-forthed first! Canning.

Ed., Rowe , Pope , Theobald , Johnson , Capell , Steevens's improved re-issue of Johnson , Malone , Reed's 1st Variorum , 2nd Variorum , 3rd Variorum by Jas.

Claudian, a new edition of his works, "cum notis variorum," in the manner of Burman. Tully's Tusculan Questions, a translation of them. Tully's De Natura Deorum, a translation of those books. Benzo's New History of the New World, to be translated. Machiavel's History of Florence, to be translated.

Sleepy, stupid, indolent finished arranging the books, and after that was totally useless unless it can be called study that I slumbered for three or four hours over a variorum edition of the Gill's-Hill's tragedy.
