I am to pay the dinner at the Savoy when we return." There is little more to record of the actual facts at this moment. The following cable, which has till now remained unpublished, tells its own tale too sadly: "Steevens, a few days before death, had recovered so far as to be able to attend to some of his journalistic duties, though still confined to bed.
Weever complains of the practice, and says, "it could be wished that walking in the middle isle of Paul's might be forborne in the time of diuine service." Steevens, note to Shakspeare. See his character of Mr. "En cuerpo, a man without a cloak." Pineda's Dictionary, 1740.
He praised Signor Baretti. 'His account of Italy is a very entertaining book; and, Sir, I know no man who carries his head higher in conversation than Baretti. There are strong powers in his mind. He has not, indeed, many hooks; but with what hooks he has, he grapples very forcibly. Steevens is now possessed of the dial-plate inscribed as above.
At least I climbed to all the new signal stations in turn, trying to get it sent, but found the instruments full up with official despatches. Strychnine was injected, and about noon we recovered hope. A galloper was sent to stop the message, and succeeded. Steevens became conscious for a time, and Maud, of the Graphic, explained to him that now it was a fight for life.
Setting aside the fact that, as Hogarth's eye-memory was marvellous, this story is highly improbable, it was expressly contradicted by George Steevens in 1781, and by John Ireland in 1798, both of whom, from their relations with Hogarth's family, were likely to be credibly informed.
Thus it sometimes happens that men entangle themselves in their own schemes. 'To be contradicted, in order to force you to talk, is mighty unpleasing. You shine, indeed; but it is by being ground. On Saturday, April 24, I dined with him at Mr. Beauclerk's, with Sir Joshua Reynolds, Mr. Langton, Mr. Steevens, Mr. Paradise, and Dr. Higgins. I mentioned that Mr.
"flush'd Ganymede, his rosy thigh Half-buried in the Eagle's down, Sole as a flying star shot thro' the sky Above the pillar'd town" you felt the wonder of the picture. Applied in a vastly different way, put to vastly different uses, the visual gift of Steevens belonged to the same order of things. Consider this passage from his Soudan book: There I leave him.
There was the envious Kenrick and the savage Wolcot, the asp George Steevens, and the polecat John Williams. It did not, however, occur to them to search the parish register of Lynn, in order that they might be able to twit a lady with having concealed her age.
The material world seems as clay on the potter's wheel, visibly taking on the impress of the human spirit; and the human spirit, as embodied in this superbly vital people, seems to be visibly thrilling to all the forces of civilisation. One of the latest, and certainly one of the most keen-sighted, of English travellers in America is Mr. G.W. Steevens, a master journalist if ever there was one.
To-night there was another sorrowful gathering of correspondents in the cemetery, round the grave of our brilliant colleague, G.W. Steevens, who died this afternoon from a sudden relapse, when most of us hoped that he was on the way to recovery.
