In the meantime let us recall the main facts of Saturn's dimensions and situation in the solar system. Saturn is the second of the major, or Jovian, group of planets, and is situated at a mean distance from the sun of 886,000,000 miles.
After elaborate mathematical calculations covering many pages of his paper entitled "On the Stability of Saturn's Rings," he summarizes his deductions as follows: "Let us now gather together the conclusions we have been able to draw from the mathematical theory of various kinds of conceivable rings.
"If you don't stand by, I'll open fire! This is your last warning!" Astro grabbed the mike from Roger's hand. "All right!" he bellowed. "We don't know what it's all about, but for the love of Saturn's rings, don't start shooting." Captain Newton nodded grimly. "Very well," he said. "Bring your ship to a dead stop in space and open your starboard air lock. I will send a jet boat over to you."
At a distance of something less than 20,000 miles from the planet or perhaps it would be more correct to say above the planet, for the rings hang directly over Saturn's equator the broad, bright ring merges into a mysterious gauzelike object, also in the form of a ring, which extends to within 9,000 or 10,000 miles of the planet's surface, and therefore itself has a width of say 10,000 miles.
Chaucer thus presents the chief effects which Saturn produces in the fortunes of men and nations Saturn himself being the speaker: Jupiter, on the contrary, though Saturn's next neighbour in the solar system, produces effects of an entirely contrary kind.
Mutual perturbations, and the disturbing pulls of Saturn's orthodox satellites, as investigated by Maxwell, explain nearly all the phenomena of the rings in a manner highly satisfactory.
"But," he said calmly, "I mustn't; because there is no way out for me there's no way out of anything for me while I live down here." "Down where?" "On this exotic planet called the earth, dear child," he said with mocking gravity. "I'm a sort of moon-calf a seed blown clear from Saturn's surface, which fell here and sprouted into the thing you call Louis Malcourt."
In connection with Saturn's moons there is another of those astonishing facts that are continually cropping up to remind us that, however much we know, there is such a vast deal of which we are still ignorant.
Still, I stay not now further to enlarge upon it; I must press on; and will not cruelly encourage the birth of thoughts brought forth only to be destroyed, like father Saturn's babes the anthropophagite. A good reason for selection at last presents itself.
The biggest item of all is the moment of momentum of Jupiter, due to its revolution around the sun; in fact, in this single investment nearly sixty per cent. of the total moment of momentum of the solar system is found. The next heaviest item is the moment of momentum of Saturn's revolution, which is twenty-four per cent.
