Lord Bacon, who was a very great physician in both senses of the word, hath this aphorism in his "Essay upon Health," 'Nihil magis ad Sanitatem tribuit quam crebrae et domesticae purgationes'. By 'domesticae', he means those simple uncompounded purgatives which everybody can administer to themselves; such as senna-tea, stewed prunes and senria, chewing a little rhubarb, or dissolving an ounce and a half of manna in fair water, with the juice of a lemon to make it palatable.
Some simple change of diet, such as a ripe uncooked apple, eaten before breakfast, or a fruit diet for a day or two may put all right. So also with the use of wheaten meal porridge or bread. Rest must be reckoned on, especially if the patient has been using purgatives freely. Do not act as if castor oil were a necessary article of diet.
The money that they did not have was forced from them by intolerable tortures; the skin of their bones was probed, cut, and stripped, in search of anything that they might have sewed within. The brutality of these evil-doers was so great that, suspecting that the wretches had swallowed gold and silver, they gave them purgatives to drink, so that they would either vomit or burst their insides.
The water or oil will carry the living thing, whatever it be, out of the ear, and the child is at once relieved. If a child swallow a piece of broken glass, what ought to be done? Avoid purgatives, as the free action on the bowels would be likely to force the spiculae of glass into the mucous membrane of the bowels, and thus would wound them, and might cause ulceration, and even death.
A little later in life children are liable to ascarides or seat worms, called by some "pin worms." No applications, purgatives, "vermifuges," injections or other mechanical means should ever be employed to remove these, as they are of constitutional origin and should be so treated, until perfectly cured.
In another respect, however, it is a disadvantage, for it sometimes interferes with giving the mother purgatives, which she may need. So far as possible, therefore, the taking of medicine should be limited during lactation, and certainly no drug should be employed without the advice of a physician.
These may be in good measure prevented by the addition of aromatics; but we have plenty of safer and less precarious purgatives. RHUS coriaria. ELM-LEAVED SUMACH. Both the leaves and berries have been employed in medicine; but the former are more astringent and tonic, and have been long in common use, though at present discarded from the Pharmacopoeias. From his account one would infer that, notwithstanding the excellence of the ague pad, when he is attacked, he uses blue mass, followed with purgatives, then 20 grains of quinine. Also has used arsenic, but it did not agree with him. Also used Capsicum with good results. Had enlarged spleen; not so now. 2d specimen of Mr. Smith's blood. Stelline, no Gemiasma. 3d specimen, do.
This we see in the case of women who take purgatives during pregnancy, whose children are thin, but well-shaped and slender, because from their slight build they receive more distinctly the impress of their mother's form. However, it may be that the cause of this phenomenon is yet to be discovered.
Slowly amending; the whining has ceased, and the animal seldom scratches. Continue the lotion, alteratives, and purgatives. 10th Oct. Slowly improving. Continue the treatment. 17th. One ear well, the other nearly so. 24th. Both ears were apparently well. Omit the lotion. 28th. One ear was again ulcerated. Applied the aerugo aeris. 31st.
